Vietnam Tuna market update mid-July 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - Tuna exports are projected to reach 456.8 million USD in the first half of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 20%, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

After decreasing in 2023, exports rose by 22% in the first five months of the year to 388 million USD.Shipments of canned tuna products, bagged tuna and frozen loin/fillet increased by 44%, 24%, and 7%. Exports of frozen whole tuna nearly tripled.Exports to most markets increased, with those to the US and the EU, the two largest, rising by 30% and 37% and accounting for 37% and 22% of total exports.
Exports to Israel, Russia and the Republic of Korea rose by 64%, 58% and 66%.
Speaking at the association’s annual general conference in HCM City on June 10, Cao Thị Kim Lan, Director of the Binh Dinh Fisheries Joint Stock Company, said in 2023, Vietnam became the world’s 5th largest exporter of tuna behind Thailand, Ecuador, Spain, and China, rising from the 8th place 10 years ago.
Tuna exports to Spain in May 2024 increased by 182%
According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, tuna exports to Spain in May 2024 increased by 182% over the same period in 2023, reaching nearly 1.8 million USD, higher than in 2022. Accumulated in the first 5 months of 2024, tuna exports to this market reached more than 5 million USD, up 32% over the same period.
Among tuna product groups, Spain currently imports the most frozen tuna meat/loin products with HS code 0304 from Vietnam. Notably, this year frozen steamed tuna loin products are also increasing in export to this market.There are currently 10 companies participating in exporting tuna to this market. The leaders are Trang Thuy Seafood Co., Ltd, Bidifisco, and Tuna Vietnam, accounting for 60% of the total tuna export value to this market.
In the Spanish market, Vietnamese tuna competes strongly with Ecuadorian, Chinese, and Philippine tuna. These countries, with the advantage of exploitation fleets, are far superior to Vietnam in terms of domestic raw material supply
Ocean Tuna - Highlight of Binh Dinh Marine Essence Festival 2024
The Binh Dinh Marine Essence Festival 2024, themed 'Binh Dinh - Sea Aspiration,' will take place from July 11th to 15th.
The Binh Dinh Marine Essence Festival 2024 with the theme "Binh Dinh - Sea Aspiration" is a cultural, tourism, and culinary event that will be held for the first time in Quy Nhon City (Binh Dinh) from July 11th to 15th. This event is part of the summer tourism activities in 2024 organized by Binh Dinh province, spanning from June to August 2024.
Before the opening ceremony of the Binh Dinh Marine Essence Festival 2024 at Nguyen Tat Thanh Square (Quy Nhon City) at 8:00 PM on July 11th, there will be a seminar on the development, processing, and promotion of ocean tuna trade in Binh Dinh province held at the Provincial Conference Center on the same morning.
During the festival, Binh Dinh will showcase the butchering of ocean tuna, introducing the culinary art of Binh Dinh ocean tuna with flavours from Europe, Japan, and Vietnam. Additionally, 1,500 free meals will be served throughout the festival period for visitors to enjoy.
Exports of Canned Tuna to the EU Continue to Rise
Among the types of tuna products exported from Vietnam to the EU in the first five months of 2024, canned tuna has been the main product, accounting for nearly 49% of the total export value. Compared to 2023, exports of this product category from Vietnam increased by nearly 33%, reaching over USD 43 million. Compared to the first five months of 2023, exports of canned tuna to this market bloc have been continuously increasing.
