Vietnam Pangasius market update mid-July 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - According to data from Vietnam Customs, in May 2024, Vietnam's pangasius export turnover reached 167 million USD, an increase of 5% compared to May 2023.

Cumulative pangasius exports in the first 5 months of this year reached 747 million USD, up 2% over the same period last year.
After five years of implementation, the trans-pacific agreement has opened up many export opportunities for Vietnamese companies, particularly tra fish.
Under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) the market has opened up to Vietnamese fisheries, as well as pangasius, according to the Việt Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
As of June 15, 2024, Việt Nam's pangasius export turnover to the CPTPP market reached US$114 million, an increase of 10 per cent year- on- year, according to Việt Nam's General Department of Customs. Of which, the export value in the first half of June was $12 million, up 23 per cent over the same period in 2023.
In the first six months of the year, Mexico was the largest importer of Vietnamese pangasius in this bloc, with a value of $31 million, an increase of 7 per cent, followed by Japan and Canada ($18 million each) and Singapore ($16 million).
Dong Thap province: Pangasius farming area increases by 6.9%
As of June 16, Dong Thap province's pangasius farming sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with a 6.9% increase in farming area compared to the same period last year. The total pangasius farming area has reached 1,957.06 hectares, with an estimated harvest output of 265,177 tons.
Dong Thap province aims to enhance the quality, value of products, and sustainable production. The province strives for 70% of pangasius farming facilities to be digitized with identification codes as per regulations; 90% of commercial pangasius farming facilities to be certified for production conditions or to sign a commitment to safe food production according to regulations; 30% of the commercial pangasius farming area to apply and be certified for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP); and 70-80% of individual household farming areas to participate in production and consumption linkages.Currently, Dong Thap province has 375 pangasius farming facilities with identification codes, covering an area of 1,626 hectares of farming. Of these, 83 facilities have been certified for food safety conditions, covering an area of 648.35 hectares; 38 facilities apply and are certified for VietGAP, GlobalGAP, ASC, and BAP standards, covering an area of 242 hectares.
Over 313 ha of Pangasius farming area get international certifications in An Giang
Currently, An Giang province has linked consumption areas for commercial Pangasius pangasius covering approximately 1,072 hectares, accounting for 87.6% of the total farming area in the province. Notably, the farming area managed by enterprises exceeds 778 hectares, involving 9 linkage chains with 99 linked farming facilities, spanning an area of nearly 294 hectares. Prominent linked enterprises include Vinh Hoan JSC, IDI Corporation - Sao Mai Group, and Hung Phuc Thinh Food JSC.
According to the An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province currently has over 313 hectares of pangasius farming areas certified by international standards such as ASC, BAP, Global GAP, and VietGAP, with an annual production of about 200,000 tons, accounting for 25.6% of the province's total pangasius farming area. Of this, more than 252 hectares are certified by ASC, BAP, and other standards, while 61.1 hectares are certified by VietGAP.
Pangasius exports to the EU has mixed trend in H1/2024
According to data from Vietnam Customs, in the first half of June 2024, Vietnam pangasius exports to the EU reached nearly 7 million USD, up 9% over the same period. Cumulative pangasius exports to this market as of June 15, 2024, reached 77 million USD, down 6% over the same period in 2023.
The EU is one of the markets that consumes the most Vietnamese pangasius. However, in the first 5 months of this year, this market continuously increased and decreased erratically in demand for pangasius imports. After increasing imports of pangasius from Vietnam by 20% in January, the EU immediately reduced imports in the following two months. In February 2024, the EU imported 8 million USD, down 46%, and in March 2024, it imported more than 18 million, down 7% over the same period last year.
Opportunities for pangasius export - Mercosur FTA
According to Vietnam Customs, in the first half of June 2024, pangasius exports to Brazil reached 4 million USD, up 5% over the same period last year. Cumulative exports in the first 5 months of 2024 reached 50 million USD, up 47% over the same period in 2023. Export turnover peaked in January 2024 with nearly 14 million USD, up 83% over the same period. However, pangasius exports in February decreased by 6%, reaching nearly 6 million USD.
Since January, Brazil has only imported frozen fillet pangasius from Vietnam with HS code 03046200. Hung Ca 2 is the largest supplier to this market in the first 5 months of 2024, accounting for 19% of the exported value.
