Vietnam - ASEAN trade exchange in first 6 months of 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the data from the General Department of Customs, in the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam - ASEAN trade reached 40 billion USD, an increase of 11.9% over the same period last year.

Vietnam's exports of goods to the ASEAN market in the first 6 months of 2024
In the first 6 months of this year, Vietnam's export of goods to ASEAN reached 17.9 billion USD, an increase of 11.4% over the same period last year.
Thailand continued to hold the top position with 3.87 billion USD. The next was Indonesia with 2.97 billion USD; Philippines with 2.92 billion USD; and Malaysia with 2.61 billion USD.
Exports of goods to Indonesia in the first 6 months of 2024 grew
According to the statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's goods exports to the Indonesian market in June of 2024 reached 434.2 million USD, down by 12.9% compared to the previous month. Overall, the first 6 months of 2024, the country’s exports of goods to Indonesia reached 2.97 billion USD, up by 20.5% over the same period last year.
In the first 6 months of 2024, rice products led the export turnover to the Indonesian market with 444.4 million USD, an increase of 82% over the same period last year, accounting for 14.9% of the export proportion. The next was all kinds of phones and components reaching 206.3 million USD, an increase of 14.1%, accounting for 6.9% proportion.
In the first 6 months of 2024, a number of products have increased export turnover compared to the same period last year: coffee increased by 95.2%; chemicals increased by 147%; rubber increased by 81.9%; and tea increased by 81.8%.
The two-way trade between Vietnam and Indonesia in 2023 reached 13.8 billion USD, down by 2.5% compared to 2022. Of which, the imports of goods from Indonesia reach 8.73 billion USD, and the exports to this market reach 5.07 billion USD. Thus, the trade deficit from Indonesia in 2023 reached 3.66 billion USD, down by 28.3%.
In the group with a turnover of over 2 billion USD, Vietnam exported goods to Cambodia reached 2.56 billion USD, and to Singapore reached 2.49 billion USD.
Laos, Myanmar and Brunei were the three markets with the lowest export turnover in the bloc with 289 million USD, 149 million USD and 59 million USD respectively.
Among ASEAN markets, the export turnover to Brunei increased by 499% over the same period last year, from 10 million USD in the same period last year to 59 million USD. Behind was Singapore with an increase of 25% over the same period last year; Indonesia with an increase of 19% over the same period last year; Philippines with an increase of 17% over the same period last year.
The export turnover to Thailand also increased 8% over the same period last year, to Laos increased 7% over the same period last year, to Malaysia increased by 5.8% over the same period last year and to Cambodia increased slightly by 09% over the same period last year.
Myanmar was the only market with a decline in export turnover, down by 40.6% over the same period last year.
Vietnam's imports of goods from the ASEAN market in the first 6 months of 2024
Vietnam spent 22.5 billion USD to import goods from the ASEAN market in the first 6 months of this year, an increase of 12.4% over the same period last year.
In the first 6 months of 2024, Thailand was Vietnam's largest import market in ASEAN with a turnover of 5.5 billion USD.
The next was Indonesia with 4.78 billion USD, Malaysia with 4.72 billion USD. The total import turnover from these three markets reached 15 billion USD.
Cambodia was the fourth largest import market with 2.69 billion USD; the next was Singapore with 2.48 billion USD, Philippines with 1.27 billion USD.
In the group under billion USD, Vietnam spent 638 million USD to import goods from Laos, 261 million USD from Brunei and 156 million USD from Myanmar.
Among the 9 ASEAN markets, Brunei was the market with the highest growth rate with an increase of 283% over the same period last year, from 68 million USD in the first half of 2023 to 261 million USD in the first half of 2024. Malaysia was the market with the second largest growth rate with an increase of 31% over the same period last year, followed by Cambodia with an increase of 29% over the same period last year, Myanmar and the Philippines with both an increase of 19% over the same period last year.
The import turnover of goods from Indonesia and Laos both increased by 12% over the same period last year. In contrast, the value of imported goods from Thailand decreased by 4% over the same period last year, and from Singapore decreased by 0.9% over the same period last year.
