AsemconnectVietnam - In the first half of 2024, Cambodian cashew nuts accounted for 55.5% of Vietnam's total import turnover of this item.

According to General Department of Customs, in June 2024, Vietnam exported 62,640 tonnes of cashew nuts, worth 376.32 million USD, down 7.5% in volume, but up 1.6% in value compared to May 2024, up 4.5% in volume and 9.5% in value compared to June 2023. In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam exported 353,500 tonnes of cashew nuts, worth 1.94 billion USD, up 26.2% in volume and 18.7% in value compared to the same period last year.
In June 2024, average export price of Vietnam's cashew nuts reached 6,008 USD/tonne, up 9.8% compared to May 2024 and up 4.8% compared to June 2023. In the first 6 months of 2024, average export price of Vietnam's cashew nuts reached 5,502 USD/tonne, down 6.4% over the same period last year.
In June 2024, Vietnam increased cashew nut exports to most traditional and potential markets, except for the UK, Australia and Canada. In the first 6 months of 2024, Vietnam increased cashew nut exports to most traditional and potential markets, except for Saudi Arabia. Notably, Vietnam's cashew nut export to many major markets recorded double-digit growth.
On other hand, Vietnam imported nearly 1.5 million tonnes of cashew nuts, worth 1.8 billion USD, up 8.4% in volume, while value only increased slightly by 3.4%. Cambodian cashew nuts accounted for 55.5% of total import turnover of this item in Vietnam in the first half of this year. Accordingly, in the first half of this year, over 780,700 tonnes of cashew nuts from this country were imported into Vietnam, worth up to 1 billion USD. Cashew imports from Cambodian market alone increased by 36.7% in volume and 28.1% in value compared to the same period in 2023.
Vietnam is currently the world's number 1 cashew nut exporter. However, domestic supply of raw materials for processing in Vietnam is still limited, so enterprises have to import cashews in large quantities. In addition to Cambodia, enterprises also import a large amount of cashews from Africa. However, situation of importing poor quality cashews to impersonate domestic cashew brands is becoming more and more common, affecting reputation as well as brand of Vietnamese cashews.
Recently, Binh Phuoc Cashew Association had to "call for help" because of situation of poor quality goods impersonating the province's cashew brand being sold widely online. Above-mentioned products are old-crop imported cashews, poor quality. Among them, there are many wormy, moldy seeds inside, no longer have characteristic flavor and can affect health of consumers.
