Exporting a premium spice, Vietnam earns tens of millions of USD
Wednesday, July 17,2024AsemconnectVietnam - Exporting a spice that is considered a 'treasure' given by heaven has helped Vietnam earn tens of millions of USD in just the first half of 2024.
According to statistics from Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), Vietnam's star anise exports in June reached 1,548 tonnes, with a turnover of 6.7 million USD, compared to previous month, export volume decreased by 0.8%. Prosi Thang Long is the largest exporter in the month, accounting for 13.8%, reaching 213 tonnes.
In the first 6 months of this year, Vietnam exported 7,023 tonnes of star anise, with a total export turnover of 34.2 million USD, compared to the same period in 2023, export volume decreased by 5.6% and turnover decreased by 25.3%. India is the largest export market for Vietnamese star anise with 4,410 tonnes, accounting for 63% of total number of Vietnamese importers.
According to statistics from the World Spice Organization, Vietnam's star anise output ranks second globally. With star anise, Vietnam is a potential supplier to the world spice and flavoring market - worth 21.3 billion USD in 2021 and will increase to 27.4 billion USD in 2026.
Currently, Vietnam has a total star anise growing area of about 40,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in Lang Son and Cao Bang with an annual output of more than 16,000 tonnes.
Notably, in the world, star anise is almost exclusively found in Vietnam and China and can produce star anise in large quantities thanks to favorable conditions. Star anise begins to be harvested from the 4th year, however it takes about 16 years to harvest 2 crops/year, so this rare plant becomes even more valuable. The spring crop is concentrated in February and March; the summer crop is in September and October.
Star anise is one of the best spices that famous chefs always love to use in dishes. Using star anise skillfully in dishes will help elevate the dish to a completely new flavor.
In addition, when using pure star anise to soak in wine, it will help treat diseases such as colds, headaches, stomachaches, digestive diseases and bone and joint diseases. Star anise is also effective in treating skin fungus, scabies, pain relief, bruise reduction, cough treatment, expectorant... and many other healing effects. In addition, star anise essential oil is also one of the good cosmetics used in the beauty industry.
