Vietnam coffee export forecast in 2024
According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, although the amount of coffee exported in the first half of 2024 decreased sharply, in general in the first 9 months of the 2023 - 2024 crop year, Vietnam's coffee export volume was estimated to reached 25.25 million bags (equivalent to 1.52 million tonnes, an increase of nearly 7.6% over the same period last year).
The impact of climate change causes drought to occur not only in the Central Highlands (the key coffee growing region of Vietnam) but also across the globe, so the total world coffee supply has decreased sharply, pushing coffee prices to increase to the record high ever.
In Vietnam in recent years, coffee prices have been very low, only about 40,000 VND/kg, so farmers' investment in this crop was also low, many households have converted coffee growing areas to other crops that have higher economic efficiency such as durian, avocado, passion fruit, etc. This was the factor that sharply reduced harvested coffee output. In addition, some coffee growing areas are old and have not yet had time to replant, greatly affecting output.
In recent times, coffee growing areas in Vietnam have witnessed a "skyrocketing" increase in coffee prices, from 40,000 VND/kg in early 2023, to 120,000 VND in May of 2024. In June of 2024, domestic coffee prices stagnated, maintaining at 117,000 - 119,000 VND/kg. Entering July of 2024, domestic coffee prices have continued to increase and are standing around 121,000 - 122,000 VND/kg, twice higher than the same period last year.
According to industry experts, the new coffee crop will not begin to be harvested until October or November. Vietnam's coffee supply is in short supply, while speculators have begun to hoard goods, so coffee prices in the third quarter are forecast to continue to stand at a high level.
Currently, Vietnamese coffee is present in more than 70 countries and territories and Vietnam is still the second largest coffee exporter in the world. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development predicts that in 2024, coffee export turnover will definitely exceed 5 billion USD, possibly even reaching 6 billion USD - the highest level in history.
