Vietnam’s imports and exports of goods in May and first 5 months of 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, in the first 5 months of 2024, Vietnam's seafood exports reached nearly 3.55 billion USD, an increase of 4.9% compared to the first 5 months of 2023.

Meanwhile, the country’s imports of all kinds of seafood in the first 5 months of 2024 reached over 993.65 million USD, down by 5.5% compared to the first 5 months of 2023.

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s exports of seafood products in May of 2024 increased by 6.7% compared to April of 2024 and increased by 2.3% compared to May of 2023, reaching nearly 827 .89 million USD. Overall, in the first 5 months of 2024, the exports of this product group reached nearly 3.55 billion USD, up by 4.9% over the same period of 2023.
Seafood exports the most to the US market, which accounted for 17.2% of the country's total export turnover of this product group, reaching nearly 609.88 million USD, an increase of 8.4% compared to the first 5 months of 2023. In May of 2024 alone, the country’s exports of seafood to the U.S reached 145.28 million USD, up by 2.4% compared to April of 2024 but down by 3.7% compared to May of 2023.
The Japanese market ranked second in turnover, accounting for 16.1%, reaching nearly 570.38 million USD, down by 1.7% over the same period last year. In May of 2024 alone, the country’s exports of seafood to this market reached 129.23 million USD, up by 8% compared to April of 2024 but down by 5.5% compared to May of 2023.
The next was the Chinese market. In May of 2024, the country’s exports of seafood to China increased by 5.9% compared to April of 2024 but decreased 8% compared to May of 2023, reaching 138.15 million USD. In total, for the first 5 months of 2024, the country’s exports to this market increased by 4.8% compared to the first 5 months of 2023, reaching 537.49 million USD, accounting for 15.2% of the total export turnover of this product group of the whole country.
Seafood exports to the FTA RCEP market in the first 5 months of 2024 decreased slightly by 1.1% compared to the first 5 months of 2023, reaching over 1.76 billion USD, accounting for 49.7% of the total turnover; while the exports to the FTA CPTTP market increased by 1.7%, reaching 928.57 million USD, accounting for 26.2%; and the exports to the EU market accounted for 10.8% of total turnover, reaching nearly 382.69 million USD, an increase of 11.3%.
The exports to the Southeast Asian market accounted for 6.3% of the total turnover, reaching over 223.13 million USD, down by 18.4%.

According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s import turnover of all kinds of seafood in the first 5 months of 2024 reached over 993.65 million USD, down by 5.5% compared to the first 5 months of 2023.
In May of 2024 alone, the import turnover of this product group reached nearly 203.89 million USD, up by 17.7% compared to April of 2024 and up by 4.2% compared to May of 2023.
Vietnam's main seafood import markets in May and the first 5 months of 2024
In the first 5 months of 2024, India, Norway, Indonesia, China and Japan were the main markets supplying seafood to Vietnam; in which the imports from Norway led in turnover, reaching over 122.26 million USD, accounting for 12.3% of the country's total import turnover of this product group, up by 5.3% over same period last year. In May of 2024 alone, the country’s imports of seafood from this market reached over 24.28 million USD, down by 2.3% compared to April of 2024 but up by 12% compared to May of 2023.
The Indonesian market ranked second, the imports from this market in May of 2024 increased sharply by 47.7% compared to April of 2024 and increased by 88.6% compared to May of 2023, reaching 19.69 million USD, bringing the total import turnover in the first 5 months of 2024 to 112.41 million USD, accounting for 11.3%, an increase of 31.7% compared to the first 5 months of 2023.
The next was the Chinese market with 105.17 million USD in the first 5 months of 2024, accounting for 10.6%, an increase of 16.5%; India reached 104.96 million USD, accounting for 10.6%, down by 30.9%; Japan reached 66 million USD, accounting for 6.6%, an increase of 7.7%.
The imports from FTA RCEP markets reached 358.27 million USD, up by 10.9% over the same period of 2023. The imports from CPTTP markets reached 124.59 million USD, down by 17.8% and the imports from Southeast Asian markets reached 150.48 million USD, an increase of 13.4%.
