Exports of several agricultural products in first 4 months of 2024

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, in the first 4 months of 2024, Vietnam’s rice exports increased by 9.4% in volume, 33.5% in turnover and 22% in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023.

Also in the first 4 months of this year, the country's coffee exports reached nearly 670,000 tonnes, up by 4.6% over the same period in 2023; the turnover reached more than 2.23 billion USD, an increase of 56.4%.
By the end of April of 2024, Vietnam had exported 83,067 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, with the total export turnover of 352.0 million USD, down by 19.4% in volume but increasing in turnover by 10.3% compared with the same period last year.
Vietnam's rice exports in April and the first 4 months of 2024
The preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs showed that, in April of 2024, Vietnam's rice exports decreased by 10.9% in volume, decreased by 12.6% in turnover compared to March of 2024 and the prices decreased by 2%, reaching over 1 million tonnes, equivalent to 619.89 million USD, the average price was 618.6 USD/tonne. Overall, for the first 4 months of 2024, Vietnam’s rice exports increased by 9.4% in volume, 33.5% in turnover and 22% in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023, reaching nearly 3.17 million tonnes, equivalent to equivalent to nearly 2.04 billion USD, the average price was 642.7 USD/tonne.
Vietnam's main rice export markets in the first 4 months of 2024
Vietnam's rice exported the most to the Philippine market in the first 4 months of 2024, accounting for 47% of the total volume and 45.9% of the country's total rice export turnover, reaching nearly 1.49 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 935.61 million USD, the price was at 628 USD/tonne, up by 15.8% in volume, up by 44.5% in turnover and up by 24.8% in price compared to 4 months of 2023. In April of 2024 alone, the country’s exports of rice to the Philippines reached 478,705 tonnes, equivalent to 286.82 million USD, the price was at 599.2 USD/tonne, down by 6.4% in volume, down by 8% in turnover and down by 1.8% in price compared to March of 2024.
Rice exports to Indonesia ranked second in the market, a sharp increase of 79% in volume, a 133.7% increase in turnover and a 30.5% increase in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023, reaching 548,582 tonnes, equivalent to 348.31 million USD, priced at 634.9 USD/tonne, accounting for over 17% of the country's total rice export volume and turnover.
The exports of rice to the Malaysian market increased by 26.3% in volume, 59.1% in turnover and 26% in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023, reaching 202,387 tonnes, equivalent to 123.33 million USD, the average price was 609.4 USD/tonne, accounting for over 6% of total volume and total turnover.
It is forecasted that the world will have a shortage of about 7 million tonnes of rice in 2024. This creates opportunities for rice exporting countries; including Vietnam.
In 2024, Vietnam can meet the supply to export rice equivalent to 2023 (8.13 million tonnes) but still ensure food security.
Vietnam's commodity rice export output in 2024 is still mainly concentrated in the Mekong Delta provinces. The total volume of commodity rice for export in the Mekong Delta provinces in 2024 is estimated to reach about 7.6 million tonnes. Of which, high quality rice group is about 3.2 million tonnes; fragrant and specialty rice group reached 2.5 million tonnes; average quality rice group reached 1.15 million tonnes; sticky rice group reached 0.75 million tonnes.
Vietnam's coffee exports in the first 4 months of 2024
The preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs showed that in April of 2024, Vietnam's coffee exports decreased by 19.5% in volume, 7% in turnover and 14.7% in price compared to March of 2024, reaching 152,073 tonnes, equivalent to 572.95 million USD, the average price was 3,767.6 USD/tonne. Overall, for the first 4 months of 2024, coffee exports increased by 3% in volume, 53.6% in turnover and 49.2% in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023, reaching 737,797 tonnes, equivalent to nearly over 2.5 billion USD, the average price was 3,388.7 USD/tonne.
Vietnam's coffee exported the most to the German market in the first 4 months of 2024, accounting for 13.1% of the total volume and 12.7% of the country's total coffee export turnover, reaching 96,481 tonnes, equivalent to 317.84 million USD, the price was 3,294 USD/tonne, down by 2.8% in volume, up by 55% in turnover and up by 59.4% in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023. In April of 2024 alone, the exports of coffee reached 24,104 tonnes, equivalent to 88.49 million USD, priced at 3,671 USD/tonne, up by 10.9% in volume, up by 20% in turnover and up by 8.2% in price compared to March of 2024.
Coffee exports to Italy ranked second, up by 4.8% in volume, up by 54.5% in turnover and up by 47.4% in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023, reaching 73,907 tonnes, equivalent to 229 87 million USD, the price was at 3,110.3 USD/tonne, accounting for 10% of the total volume and 9.2% of the country's total coffee export turnover.
Coffee exports to the Spanish market increased by 53.7% in volume, 136.7% in turnover and 54% in price compared to the first 4 months of 2023, reaching 55,364 tonnes, equivalent to 193.28 million USD, the average price was 3,491 USD/tonne, accounting for 7.5% of total volume and 7.7% of total turnover.
Vietnam's pepper exports in April and the first 4 months of 2024
According to the preliminary statistics of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in April of 2024, Vietnam exported 26,245 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, of which black pepper reached 23,705 tonnes, pepper white reached 2,540 tonnes.
Pepper export turnover reached 116.5 million USD, of which black pepper reached 101.1 million USD, white pepper reached 15.4 million USD. In comparison to the previous month, the export volume increased by 2.2%, and by 5.2%, respectively.
The average export price of black pepper in April of 2024 reached 4,292 USD/tonne, white pepper reached 6,034 USD/tonne, an increase of 4.0% for black pepper and 6.5% for white pepper compared to March of 2024.
Pepper exports to the US market in April reached 7,514 tonnes, an increase of 15.5% compared to March and accounting for 28.6% of the export market share in the month. This was also the month with the highest pepper export volume as from June of 2021 (8,078 tonnes).
By the end of April of 2024, Vietnam had exported 83,067 tonnes of pepper of all kinds, of which black pepper reached 73,555 tonnes and white pepper reached 9,512 tonnes. The total export turnover reached 352.0 million USD, black pepper reached 298.0 million USD, white pepper reached 54 million USD. In comparison to the same period last year, the export volume decreased by 19.4%, but turnover increased by 10.3%. The average export price of black pepper in 4 months reached 4,065 USD/tonne, white pepper reached 5,678 USD/tonne, up by 19.4% for black pepper and 14.5% for white pepper respectively over the same period last year.
Vietnam's main pepper export markets in the first 4 months of 2024
The United States was Vietnam's largest pepper export market, accounting for 27.4%, reaching 22,774 tonnes and increasing by 45.2% over the same period last year. Overall, the exports to the entire Americam region increased by 40.6% and accounted for 30.2% of the export market share.
Meanwhile, the exports to Asia still account for the largest proportion at 36.2%, however compared to the same period, it decreased by 52.0%, of which the Chinese market decreased the most at 95.2%, and the UAE decreased by 23%. India was the largest export market in Asia with 5,552 tonnes, accounting for 6.7% and increasing 23.9 over the same period last year. The exports also increased in South Korea, up by 157.4%; Pakistan increased by 59.7% and the Philippines increased by 18.5%.
The European region accounted for 26.8% of the export market share and increased by 33.6% compared to the same period last year, with the leading markets including: Germany reaching 5,484 tonnes, an increase of 104.7%; the Netherlands reached 3,660 tonnes, an increase of 52.8%, Russia reached 2,386 tonnes, an increase of 68.7%.
Meanwhile, the exports to the African region decreased by 4.7%. However, the traditional Egyptian market showed positive signs when exports to this market increased by 10.7%, reaching 1,977 tonnes after the government provided foreign currency support to pay for imported goods.
