DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices remained unchanged on May 20, 2024
Monday, May 20,2024AsemconnectVietnam - On Monday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged at VND110,000 - VND111,000 per kg compared to Yesterday due to concerns about low supply from now until the end of the year and high stockpiling sentiment, according to Kinhtedothi.
Compared to the beginning of the month, domestic pepper prices are increasing by 13,000 VND/kg.
After many years of "plunging", the recovery of pepper prices is a good sign for pepper growers. This year, in addition to coffee prices continuously increasing, pepper prices are also on the rise, this is the highest price in recent years, helping people gain more profits and regain confidence in agriculture. This product was once considered the "black gold" of farmers.
Binh Phuoc province has more than 12,900 hectares of pepper trees, of which more than 12,200 hectares are being harvested. Compared to 2019, the pepper area in the province decreased by more than 4,200 hectares.
Pepper prices have increased, many farmers have the mentality to invest in taking care of their gardens again or planting new areas. In fact, lessons learned from the massive development of rubber in the 2008-2012 period and pepper in the 2010-2017 period have caused many farmers to fall into a vicious cycle of "planting tight, planting less" that has not been resolved until now. The story in Binh Phuoc is similar to many key pepper growing localities in the Central Highlands and Southeast today. Therefore, to avoid massive planting, leading to surplus products, the agricultural industry is strengthening propaganda and raising people's awareness about the pepper market and potential risks. At the same time, localities also need to have clear planning on planting areas, guidance on farming techniques, pest prevention, and stabilizing the output market for pepper plants.
Vietnam exported 83,067 tonnes of pepper worth 352 million USD in the first four months of this year, down 19.4% in volume but up 10.3% in value, the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) has reported. The average export price of black pepper was 4,065 USD per tonne and white pepper 5,678 USD per tonne, up 19.4% and 14.5%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2023.
