Vietnam’s retail sales in April and first four months of 2024
Monday, May 20,2024AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam’s retail sales and services revenue in the first four months of this year totaled 2.06 quadrillion VND (equal to 81.06 billion VND), up by 8.5% over the same period last year, said the General Statistics Office (GSO).
In April alone, the country’s retail sale and services revenue reached 522.1 trillion VND, increased by 9% from the same period last year.
The food and foodstuff sales increased by 10.3%, household utensils increased by 12.9%, garment increased by 12.7%, lodging and catering services increased by 19.1%, and tourism increased by 57.6%.
In the four months of this year, retail sales reached 1.59 quadrillion VND, up by 7.1% year-on-year (the figure was up by 4.4% if the price factor was excluded).
The retail sales of food and foodstuffs rose by 11.8%, household appliances by 14.9%, garment by 10.3%, vehicles (except cars) by 0.1%, and cultural and educational products by 17.8%. The revenue from accommodation and catering services was estimated at 237.3 trillion VND, up by 15.3% year-on-year.
The General Statistics Office said that the favourable visa policies and tourism stimulus programmes have proven effective, helping lure nearly 1.6 million international visitors in April, up by 58.2% year-on-year, and 6.2 million international visitors in the four months of this year, up by 68.3%.
Tourism revenue in the period was 19.4 trillion VND, increased by 49.3 compared with the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the revenue from other services stood at 211.1 trillion VND, a year-on-year rise of 9.4%.
To ensure the supply of essential goods and boost the domestic market in the remaining months, the GSO suggested the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) further review, amend and perfect legal documents regarding state management of the domestic market. The MoIT should continue its coordination with other ministries, agencies and localities in monitoring market developments, and providing consultations in price management, it said.
In an effort to promote consumption demand, Minister of Finance Ho Duc Phoc, authorised by the Prime Minister, submitted a proposal to the National Assembly for extending the cut in value-added tax (VAT) from 10% to 8% on specific groups of goods and services from July 1 until the end of the year.
Hanoi’s retail sales, services revenue increased by 9% in the first four months of 2024
Hanoi’s total retail sales of goods and consumer services revenue reached 266.2 trillion VND (10.46 billion USD) in the first four months of this year, up 9% year-on-year, according to the municipal People’s Committee.
In the period, passenger transport increased significantly, reaching 135.2 million arrivals, up 13.3% year-on-year, while revenue hit 7.2 trillion VND, up 17.5%. Meanwhile, the volume of goods transported reached 526.4 million tonnes, up 15.7%, resulting in 30 trillion VND, up 17.1% over the same period last year. In addition, revenue from transportation support activities reached 29.1 trillion VND, a year-on-year rise of 7.6%.
In the first four months of this year, tourism played a leading role in the capital's economic sector. In the period, the city welcomed 1.5 million foreign tourist arrivals, up 59.8% year-on-year.
In April, the revenue of the retail sales of goods and consumer services is estimated to reach 66.6 trillion VND, up 1.8% month-on-month and 8.1% year-on-year.
Commodities with impressive growth in retail revenue included gemstones and precious metals (40.1%), food (11.3%), and vehicles excluding cars (11%).
Ho Chi Minh City’s retail sales increased by 12% in the first four months of 2024
Ho Chi Minh City’s total retail sales of goods and consumer services revenue reached over 366.94 trillion VND (equal to 14.44 billion USD) in the first four months of 2024, up by 12% year-on-year, according to the municipal Department of Industry and Trade.
The growth was driven by strong sales of various goods, with over 177 trillion VND coming from retail sales alone, marking a 10.5% increase year-on-year. The January-April breakdown showed a 15.5% rise in sales in January, followed by 8.7% in February, 9.7% in March, and a significant 13.8% jump in April.
The demand for several product categories surged, including food and groceries up 8.6%, household appliances and equipment increased by 20.5%, wood and construction materials by 29.9%, and apparel by 3.4%. The city's consumer market saw a surge in activity with new businesses entering the commercial and service sectors, offering diverse sales channels with promotions and discounts.
Commercial and service firms actively worked to stabilise prices and stimulate consumer spending, leading to a cooling trend in the prices of several commodity groups, particularly food and household items.
