Vietnam's seafood exports and imports in March and first 3 months of 2024
Friday, April 26,2024AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, in the first 3 months of 2024, seafood exports reached nearly 1.95 billion USD, an increase of 6.4% compared to the first 3 months of 2023.
Meanwhile, the import turnover of all kinds of seafood to Vietnam in the first 3 months of 2024 reached over 619.6 million USD, down by 6.6% compared to the first 3 months of 2023.
Vietnam’s seafood exports in March and the first 3 months of 2024
The preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs showed that, Vietnam’s exports of seafood products in March of 2024 increased by 61.5% compared to February of 2024 but decreased by 3.2% compared to March of 2023, reaching nearly 357.7 million USD. Overall, in the first 3 months of 2024, the country’s total exports of this product group reached nearly 1.95 billion USD, an increase of 6.4% compared to the first 3 months of 2023.

The US market was leading the list of the country’s major seafood markets, accounted for 16.6% of the country's total export turnover of this product group, reaching over 323.37 million USD, an increase of 14.3% compared to the first 3 months of 2023. In March of 2024 alone, the country’s exports of seafood to the U.S reached 134.9 million USD, a sharp increase of 73.4% compared to February of 2024 and an increase of 5% compared to March of 2023.
Japanese market ranked second, accounting for 16.5%, reaching over 321.51 million USD, down by 0.2% over the same period last year. In March of 2024 alone, the country’s exports of seafood to this market reached 124.72 million USD, up by 87.2% compared to February of 2024 but down by 8% compared to March of 2023.
The exports of seafood to the Chinese market in March of 2024 increased by 15% compared to February of 2024 but decreased by 17% compared to March of 2023, reaching 93.57 million USD. Totally in the first 3 months of 2024, the country’s exports to this market increased by 14% compared to the first 3 months of 2023, reaching nearly 271.69 million USD, accounting for 14% of the country's total export turnover of this product group.
Seafood exports to the FTA RCEP market in the first 3 months of 2024 increased by 1% compared to the first 3 months of 2023, reaching over 971.17 million USD, accounting for 49.9% of the total turnover; while the exports to the FTA CPTTP market increased by 3.3%, reaching nearly 523.28 million USD, accounting for 26.9%. The seafood exports to the EU market accounted for 9.8% of total turnover, reaching over 191 million USD, down by 6% while the exports to the Southeast Asian market accounted for 6.9% of total turnover, reaching over 133.2 million USD, down by 17.7%.

According to the preliminary statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, the import turnover of all kinds of seafood to Vietnam in the first 3 months of 2024 reached over 619.6 million USD, down by 6.6% compared to the first 3 months of 2023.
In March of 2024 alone, the import turnover of this product group reached nearly 215.94 million USD, a sharp increase of 34.4% compared to February of 2024 but a decrease of 12.3% compared to March of 2023.
Main seafood import markets in March and the first 3 months of 2024
In the first 3 months of 2024, India, Norway, Indonesia, China and Japan were the main markets supplying seafood to Vietnam. Of which the imports from Indonesia led in turnover, reaching 79.38 million USD, accounting for 12.8% of the country's total import turnover of this product group, up by 29.8% compared to the first 3 months of the year 2023. In March of 2024 alone, the imports from this market reached 21.27 million USD, up by 30.5% compared to February of 2024 and up by 17.3% compared to March of 2023.
Norwegian market ranked second. The imports from this market in March of 2024 increased by 21.6% compared to February of 2024 but decreased by 9.7% compared to March of 2023, reaching 27.9 million USD, bringing the total import turnover in the first 3 months of 2024 to 73.13 million USD, accounting for 11.8%, an increase of 4.6% compared to the first 3 months of 2023.
The next was the Indian market, reaching 60.89 million USD in the first 3 months of 2024, accounting for 9.8%, down by 43.9%; while the imports from China reached 67.55 million USD, accounting for 10.9%, up by 21.7%; and the imports from Japan reached 38.31 million USD, accounting for 6.2%, down by 0.8%.
The imports from FTA RCEP markets reached 236.28 million USD, up by 17.8% over the same period in 2023. The imports from CPTTP markets reached 71.48 million USD, down by 17.9% and the imports from Southeast Asian markets reached 102.96 million USD, an increase of 22.7%.
