Setting a new record, the fruit and vegetable industry grew in difficulty
Monday, April 15,2024AsemconnectVietnam - Despite facing many difficulties with rising freight rates and long shipping times, fruit and vegetable exports still continue to grow strongly.
Continuously having export orders to markets, Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien, Chairman of Board of Directors of Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company, said that since the beginning of the year, enterprises has still had strong growth in fruit and vegetable exports. Currently, enterprises is focusing on exporting products such as carrots, durian, fresh coconut and many vegetable products to Korea and Japan. Both key markets of enterprises are growing quite well. Which season, which vegetables and fruits, the products are promoted by enterprises to customers from fresh to deeply processed products.
"Since the beginning of the year, enterprises has welcomed many Japanese business delegations to work, signed contracts for deeply processed fruit and vegetable products, such as bananas coated with chocolate, matcha, suitcases", Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien shared.
As for the Chinese market, Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien said that enterprises is currently working with authorities to complete business documents to prepare for the "wave" of exporting frozen durian and fresh coconut when the market officially opened.
Meanwhile, thanks to bold investment in cold storage and increased processing, many partners from Europe and Japan have come to Phuc Tien Agricultural Products Joint Stock Company and placed orders. Mr. Trinh Ngoc Minh, General Director of Phuc Tien Agricultural Products Joint Stock Company, said that enterprises has signed an export contract for the whole year.
According to Mr. Minh, fresh agricultural products have a fairly short shelf life, so deep processing helps bring products to distant markets. The company's semi-processed frozen mango products exported to Europe cost more than 1.2 USD/kg. This is a solution that both effectively solves output and enhances product value.
Assessing picture of fruit and vegetable exports in the first months of the year, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association acknowledged that for the first time in the first quarter, fruit and vegetable exports exceeded 1 billion USD and reaching 1.23 billion USD, up 25.8% over the same period last year. Many premises also show that fruit and vegetable exports will continue to make a breakthrough and will break the record in 2023.
"Major contributor to fruit and vegetable turnover is still durian. This product will grow even stronger when the Central Highlands - the region supplying large durian output - is in the opposite season with Thailand when the harvest is still in progress" - Mr. Nguyen shared.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen further informed that with the Protocol signed between Vietnam and China, durian exports will bring in 3.5 billion USD this year. Along with key products such as fresh coconut, dragon fruit, grapefruit, banana, passion fruit, mango... fruit and vegetable exports in 2024 will reach a record high value ever.
In particular, Plant Protection Department recently requested localities and local specialized agencies to review and synthesize growing areas and packaging facilities for fresh coconuts and frozen durians exported to China. This accelerates process of opening the market for fresh coconuts and frozen durians exported from Vietnam to China and prepares all conditions for registration of growing area codes and packaging facilities after the Protocol is signed.
With the above advantages, experts predict that although the Red Sea event causes many difficulties for Vietnamese fruit and vegetable products when exported to Europe and the US, it will promote exports to China and other regions. Neighboring areas increased sharply, especially for durian, coconut, dragon fruit, jackfruit, banana, mango... Therefore, fruit and vegetable exports are forecast to continue to surge and break records in 2023.
“It is forecasted that by 2024, fruit and vegetable exports will continue to grow by 15-20%. Even if we make good use of the opportunities brought by the Protocols, fruit and vegetable exports can reach 6.5-7 billion USD", Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen affirmed.
