AsemconnectVietnam - On Friday, Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area fell by 1000 VND to VND101,700 – VND102,200 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.

Gia Nghia of Dak Nong provided the maximum price of VND102,200/kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND101,700/kg. Robusta coffee fell to VND101,700 per kg in Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha; to VND101,900 per kg - VND102,000 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND102,100 - VND 102,200 in Dak Nong; to VND102,000 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND101,900- VND102,000 per kg in Gia Lai.
The Central Highlands is in the peak period of the dry season in 2024. Prolonged intense hot weather causes water levels in rivers, streams, lakes and dams to decrease rapidly. Some places have exhausted their water sources.
This year, due to the effects of climate change, the dry season comes earlier than usual and prolonged hot weather causes water levels at dams in some localities to drop rapidly.
Most recently, the escalation of tensions in the Red Sea has created unforeseen complications in shipping routes, driving the need for roasters to switch to storing coffee in the consumer country.
Global production has declined due to droughts in coffee-growing countries caused by climate change and the El Nino phenomenon, Nguyen Hai Nam, chairman of the Vietnam Coffee Cocoa Association said.
Increased shipping costs due to disruptions caused by tensions in the Red Sea are also driving up prices, he added.
Financial services company Marex Group has predicted a global shortage of around 2.7 million bags of robusta coffee in the 2024-25 season due to a decrease in production in Vietnam.
The country’s exports in 2023-24 would decrease to 1.4 million tons, it forecast.
In the first quarter of this year Vietnam exported 799,000 tons of coffee, up 44% year-on-year, for $1.9 billion, according to data from the General Department of Customs. The average price is currently at $3,181 per ton, up 43.5% from a year earlier.
