It is forecasted that fruit and vegetable exports may grow by 15-20% in 2024
Vegetables and fruits are one of the key product groups with high growth in recent times.
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), the export prospects of this industry in 2024 will continue to have positive developments, especially from the Chinese market. Notably, Vietnam has 14 agricultural products officially exported to this market, including durian, bird's nest, sweet potatoes, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, watermelon, banana, black jelly, mangosteen, lychee and passion fruit.
Along with that, China is increasing imports of processed fruit and vegetable products from Vietnam. This is a good opportunity for Vietnam to grow export turnover and increase the value of fruits and vegetables.
According to experts' estimates, fruit and vegetable exports in 2024 could grow by 15% to 20% compared to 2023. Thus, the export turnover of this product this year could reach a new record of 6.5 billion USD.
Previously, 2023 witnessed a strong growth in fruit and vegetable export turnover and achieved spectacular results of 5.6 billion USD, an increase of 66.67% compared to 2022 (equivalent to an increase in turnover of 2.24 billion USD).
According to Labor Newspaper, the fruit and vegetable industry is expected to remain a bright spot in 2024 when many businesses said their order books were full until the end of the first quarter.
Durian alone will bring in 3.5 billion USD after the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Department of Customs of China signed a protocol on plant quarantine requirements for Vietnamese fruits exported to the neighboring country last year, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit).
He added that although shipments to Europe and the US are forecast to be hindered by Red Sea tensions in the near term, the exports to China will be boosted by durian, dragon fruit, jackfruit, banana and mango.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that in the near future, there will be 4 more Vietnamese products exported to China through official channels including medicinal herbs, coconuts, frozen fruits and watermelon, contributing greatly to Vietnam's agricultural export revenue.
According to the statistics figures from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover last year was estimated at 5.6 billion USD, up by 66% over the same period last year. Surpassing dragon fruit, durian recorded the highest export value.
Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable import markets include China, the US, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, the Netherlands, Taiwan (China), Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Russia .
China is still the largest customer with import turnover reaching 3.7 billion USD in the year 2023, an increase of nearly 250% in value and 65% in market share compared to 2022.
