Vietnam's coffee market share in Italy's total imports increased

According to statistics from Eurostat, in 2023, the Italian market importing coffee from the non-EU market reached 624,610 tonnes with value of 1.94 billion EUR (equivalent to nearly 2.1 billion USD), a decrease 4.2% in volume and down by 8.2% in value compared to 2022.
Although Italy's coffee imports decreased in 2023 with a large import market capacity, Italy is still a large potential market for coffee producers in the world. Coffee is an indispensable part of Italian culture.
It is forecast that the Italian coffee market will achieve an average growth rate of 3.35%/year in a period of 2024 - 2029. Market survey results show that Robusta coffee dominates coffee market in Italy with 56% market share by 2023. Robusta coffee beans have a high caffeine content making them less acidic and richer. This is said to be a great opportunity for Vietnamese coffee exporters.
In 2023, Italy imported coffee mainly from sources outside EU, including: Brazil, Vietnam, Uganda, India, Tanzania…Out of which, Italy’s coffee turnover importing from Brazil in 2023 reached 198,370 tonnes with a value of 727.31 million USD, down 0.8% in volume and 10.1% in value compared to 2022.

In 2023, Italy imported 150,130 tonnes coffee from Vietnam with a value of 345.38 million USD, down 0.5% in volume and down 1.2% in value compared to 2022. Coffee market share of Vietnam in Italy's total imports from non-EU markets increases from 23.13% in 2022 to 24.04% in 2023.
In 2023, Italy reduced coffee imports from Uganda and India markets, but sharply increases imports from Tanzania market, up 173.2% in volume and 172.3% in value compared to 2022.
However, volume and value of Italy's coffee imports from Tanzania still remain low. In future, Brazil and Vietnam will still be two main sources of coffee for Italy.
