Vietnam exported 398,000 metric tonnes of coffee in the first two months of 2024, up 16.2% from a year earlier, government data released on Thursday showed. Coffee export revenue in the same period rose 67.5% to $1.25 billion, the General Statistics Office said in a report. Coffee export turnover set a record when it surpassed the 1 billion USD mark after only 2 months. This causes a shortage of domestic goods, especially in the context of decreased output last year.
The Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association estimates that coffee production in the 2023/24 crop year will continue to decrease by 10% compared to the previous crop. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts that output in two other major supplying countries, Brazil and Indonesia, will also decrease by 6.2% and 8% respectively compared to the 2022/23 crop year.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has set a target of Vietnam’s total coffee plantation area reaching 640,000 - 660,000 hectares by 2030, with exports expected to account for 80-85% of the country’s total production.
