Thursday, February 22,2024AsemconnectVietnam - Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports increased sharply right from the beginning of the year.
Continuing the strong increase in 2023, fruit and vegetable exports will continue to grow positively. It is estimated that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value in January of 2024 reached 510 million USD, an increase of 24.9% compared to December of 2023 and an increase of 112.1% compared to January of 2023.
The Import-Export Department (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) assessed that the positive results in the first month of the year are a good sign for the fruit and vegetable industry in 2024.
Many types of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables dominate many large markets around the world.
2023 was a successful year for the fruit and vegetable industry, in the context of the market facing many difficulties, global demand for goods was slow due to the impact of high inflation, and increasing geopolitical conflicts in many large markets. The results achieved by the fruit and vegetable industry were due to innovation in production methods of enterprises. Along with that, Vietnam participates in deep integration into the world economy through the signing of many bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements.
In addition, the authorities promoted trade promotion, expanded markets, and promoted trade facilitation solutions.
In the structure of exported fruits and vegetables in 2023, the fruit category achieved the strongest growth rate, of which durian contributed to this strong growth, reaching 2.2 billion USD, an increase of 430.1% compared to 2022. In addition, other exported fruits also achieved positive growth rates such as jackfruit, mangos.
In addition to fruits, the exports of processed products also grew significantly in 2023. This was a market trend and Vietnam's processed fruit and vegetable products also bring positive growth results, reaching 1.28 billion USD, an increase of 19.9% compared to 2022.
Vietnamese fruits are present in many markets around the world, especially in large markets with strict quality standards, affirming the position of Vietnamese fruits, which opens up many great opportunities for the vegetable industry.
According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover last year was estimated at 5.6 billion USD, up by 66% over the same period last year. Surpassing dragon fruit, durian recorded the highest export value.
Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable import markets include China, the US, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, the Netherlands, Taiwan (China), Australia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Russia.
China was still Vietnam's largest import market with import turnover reaching 3.7 billion USD in the year, an increase of nearly 250% in value and 65% in market share compared to 2022.
Mr. Ngo Tuong Vy, General Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Export Group Joint Stock Company, said that the company's revenue in 2023 doubled compared to the previous year thanks to the growth of durian exports, accounting for 80% of total revenue.
Expectations for fruit and vegetable exports in 2024
According to the Import-Export Department, with the results achieved in 2023, the prospect of exporting fruits and vegetables in 2024 is very positive, when many types of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables dominate many large markets in the world. It is expected that the export value of fruits and vegetables in 2024 will reach about 6 billion to 6.5 billion USD.
The main factors that push the fruit and vegetable industry to achieve its target in 2024 include: the demand in the largest fruit and vegetable export market, China, is still high, and Vietnam is still negotiating with the Chinese side to have more products officially exported to this market; Vietnam continues to promote exports to major markets such as the US, EU, Australia, South Korea...; consumers around the world increasingly recognize the benefits and positive impacts of plant-based nutrition as well as the positive and sustainable impact on the environment, and the trend of consuming plant-based foods is increasing in the global market.
Fruit and vegetable exports are predicted to set a new record in 2024, possibly exceeding the revenue target of 6 billion USD, even approaching the milestone of 7 billion USD.
This year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will accelerate negotiations to officially export Vietnam's fresh chili and fresh coconuts to the Chinese market. With the possibility that Vietnam's frozen durian will also be allowed to be exported to China, fruit and vegetable export turnover in 2024 is forecast to increase significantly.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that it is expected that there will be 4 more products officially exported to China: medicinal herbs, coconuts, frozen fruits and watermelons.
According to Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company, market surveys show that Chinese consumers prefer processed durian products, which is an advantage for Vietnam in production of value-added products from durian.
Mr. Tien added that this market still has a lot of potential and great opportunities for Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT) Dang Phuc Nguyen said Vietnam's watermelon exports could double, reaching 100 million USD this year when China's Protocol allows the imports of fresh watermelon from Vietnam takes effect.
Experts recommend that fruit and vegetable exporters strictly comply with requirements and regulations on food safety, traceability, confirmation of growing area codes and packaging stated in the signed protocols.
