DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices rose by 2000 VND on February 21
Wednesday, February 21,2024AsemconnectVietnam - On Wednesday domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands increased by 2000 VND to VND89,000 to VND89,500 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.
The maximum price for pepper increased to VND89,500 per kg in Binh Phuoc, while in Dong Nai province, the lowest price rose to VND87,000 per kg. Farmers in Dac Lac and Dak Nong sold pepper for VND89,000 per kilogram, in Gia Lai province for VND86,500 per kilogram, and in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province for VND89,000 per kilogram.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Hien - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) said that Vietnam's pepper output in 2024 will likely be at the lowest level in the last 5 years.
Mr. Hien added that in other pepper producing countries such as India, Indonesia, and Brazil, output is also forecast to decrease. This leads to the amount of pepper imported into Vietnam also decreasing in 2024.
In Southeast Asia, Vietnam mainly imports pepper from Indonesia, but the country's pepper prices are increasingly high because Indonesia's customers are mainly Japan, Korea, and China - which are willing to pay high prices. Therefore, Indonesia only sells to Vietnam when there is excess supply.
As for Brazil, although the price is lower than Vietnam, with the situation of drought and crop failure, Brazilian people will not rush to sell at cheap prices. With low inventory, forecast reduced output and lower imports, Mr. Nguyen Tan Hien said that Vietnam's pepper exports in 2024 will likely reach the lowest level in the last 5 years. This means prices will also be high in the near future.
Due to the effects of climate change, the 2024 harvest will be slower than 2023, and Vietnam's pepper output in 2024 is expected to only reach 170,000 tonnes, down 10.5% compared to 2023.
