Wednesday, February 21,2024AsemconnectVietnam - On Wednesday, Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area fell by 400 VND to VND80,900 – VND81,700 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.
Gia Nghia of Dak Nong provided the maximum price of VND81,700 /kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND80,900 /kg. Robusta coffee fell to VND80,900 per kg in Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha; to VND81,500 per kg - VND81,600 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND81,600 – VND81,700 in Dak Nong; to VND81,400 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND81,400 – VND81,500 per kg in Gia Lai.
Vietnam is expected to earn $4.5-5 billion from exporting coffee this year due to the continuously rising coffee price, according to the Vietnam Coffee Cocoa Association (Vicofa).
The price of Robusta coffee reached a 28-year record in February, hitting $3,435 per tonne, figures from the Mercantile Exchange of Vietnam (MXV) show.
Meanwhile, the price of coffee beans in the central highlands stood at a record VND82,000 ($3.34) per kilo on February 20, up VND14,000 ($0.57) compared to January 1.
The MXV said that limited supply and tensions in the Red Sea will see the coffee price continue heading upwards.
Vicofa estimated that Vietnam’s 2023-2024 crop is likely to be down 10 per cent compared to the previous crop.
Meanwhile, the coffee output of two other major suppliers - Brazil and Indonesia - are also forecast to fall 6.2 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
Vietnam earned over $621 million from exporting 210,000 tonnes of coffee in January, up 99.6 percent in value and 48 percent in volume year-on-year, the General Department of Vietnam Customs reports.
It exported 1.61 million tonnes of coffee last year worth $4.18 billion. The average export price was $2,604 per tonne, a year-on-year rise of 14.1 percent.
The coffee output of the 2023-2024 crop in Dak Lak province is forecast to reach 580,000 tonnes, thus the coffee export volume is estimated at 330,000 tonnes. If prices stay as high as they are now and fluctuate slightly in the near future, the province's coffee export turnover could hit 900 million USD.
Lam Dong province has about 175,700 ha of coffee and the output for 2023-2024 crop is expected to hit 535,000 tonnes.
According to the Vietnam Coffee-Cocoa Association (Vicofa), Vietnam’s coffee production in the 2023-2024 crop will be 1.6-1.7 million tonnes, lower than 1.78 million tonnes in 2022-2023.
