DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices held steady on February 5
Monday, February 5,2024AsemconnectVietnam - On Monday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged at VND80,500 to VND83,500 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi,vn.
The maximum price for pepper rose to VND83,500 per kg in Binh Phuoc, while in Dong Nai province, the lowest price stayed at VND80,500 per kg. Farmers in Dac Lac and Dak Nong sold pepper for VND83,000 per kilogram, in Gia Lai province for VND80,500 per kilogram, and in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province for VND82,500 per kilogram.
Due to the effects of climate change, this year's harvest in Vietnam is later than last year, and Vietnam's pepper output in 2024 is expected to reach 170 thousand tonnes, down 10.5% compared to 2023.
In an article published in The Star Online (Malaysia) earlier this year, author Jack Wong commented that the global pepper market will be brighter in 2024, due to continued decline in output in main producing countries, will push up the price of this spice.
Jack Wong quoted Director William S.C. Yii of leading pepper trading company Nguong Aik (Kuching) Sdn Bhd said that adverse weather conditions caused by the El Nino phenomenon are affecting pepper productivity and harvest.
A global pepper production shortage is expected in 2024, due to climate change and the lack of new planting areas in major producing countries in recent years. The weather is "very dry" in Brazil, and prolonged periods of heavy rain in the Central Highlands and southern provinces of Vietnam have brought unexpected challenges to pepper growers.
The author said that a significant amount of rain in August 2023 fell on Binh Phuoc province, a key black pepper growing area in Vietnam. Pepper output in Vietnam has tended to decrease in recent years due to low prices, and because some farmers have switched to growing other crops.
