Vietnam to build strategy for development of logistics services

The logistics service industry actively contributes to economic activities, first of all import-export and domestic production, circulation and distribution. Although Vietnam's logistics costs are still quite high compared to developed countries in the world, in recent years the logistics service industry has made significant contributions to import and export activities, increasing import and export activities; and became a bright spot because of its outstanding growth rate compared to the previous period. Vietnam's total import-export turnover increased from 428.1 billion USD in 2017 to 681.1 billion USD in 2023 with an average growth rate of about 8.4%/year for the entire period 2017 - 2023.
Vietnam currently has more than 34,000 businesses operating in the logistics field. According to the World Bank (WB) Report, Vietnam's national logistics capacity index (LPI) in 2023 ranked 43/139 countries and territories participating in the study, up by 21 places compared to 2016.
Vietnam also ranks at the top of emerging markets, the growth rate of the logistics industry in Vietnam in recent years has reached about 14-16%, with a scale of about 40-42 billion USD/year.
Implementing the Prime Minister's direction, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has researched and developed the Vietnam Logistics Services Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2050.
In particular, the goal of 2030 is that the contribution of the logistics service industry to GDP will reach 6-8%, the rate of outsourcing logistics services will reach 60-70%; logistics costs decrease to the equivalent of 16 - 18% of GDP; and the ranking of Vietnamese logistics according to the LPI index in the world reaching 45th or higher.
By 2050, the contribution of the logistics service industry to GDP will reach 12 - 15%; outsourcing rate reach 70-90%; logistics costs decrease by 10-12%; the ranking of Vietnamese logistics according to the LPI index in the world reaching 30th or higher.
The major task groups outlined in the strategy include: improving legal institutions, improving the business investment environment, encouraging economic sectors to participate in developing logistics services; reform planning, promote investment in infrastructure construction to develop Vietnam's logistics services in a synchronous and modern direction; develop the logistics service market, improve competitiveness for businesses; promote research and application of scientific and technological achievements, digital transformation and green transformation in the field of logistics services; training human resources for high quality logistics services and professional service delivery style; enhance the role of associations in the field of logistics and nuclear enterprises.
The draft also provides solutions to implement the strategy: perfecting legal institutions for logistics activities; promote investment in infrastructure construction to develop logistics services; strengthen the internal strength of the enterprise; training high quality logistics human resources.
