DAILY: Vietnamese coffee prices rose by 1200 VND on January 23

 Tuesday, January 23,2024

AsemconnectVietnam - On Tuesday, Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area rose by 1200 VND to VND72,700 – VND73,400 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.

Gia Nghia of Dak Nong provided the maximum price of VND72,400/kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND71,500/kg. Robusta coffee increased to VND72,700/kg in Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha; to VND73,300 – VND73,400 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND73,300 – VND73,400/kg in Dak Nong; to VND73,300 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND73,200 – VND73,300 per kg in Gia Lai.
Congested shipping along with low inventories on the London and New York exchanges help coffee maintain its upward momentum. The Red Sea is an important maritime route, connecting the Mediterranean with the Indian Ocean, or from Europe to Asia. Tensions in the Red Sea therefore increase risks to global trade flows and further increase shipping costs.
The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited data saying that tensions in the Red Sea could cause a container passing through Europe to incur an additional cost of 1,000 - 2,000 USD. Now, Europe can almost only rely on Vietnam to buy Robusta coffee.
March robusta futures on ICE settled up $92, or 2.9%, at $3,220 a metric ton, having earlier hit $3,229 - the highest since Jan. 2008 when the current form of the contract first started trading. March arabica coffee rose 3.8% at $1.9225 per lb, hitting the highest so far this year at $1.9315.
Continued attacks by Iran-aligned Houthis in the Red Sea are boosting prices by slowing down shipments of robusta coffee from Asia to Europe, dealers said, while farmers in Vietnam remain reluctant to sell.
