Chili exports in 2023 reached 20 million USD, up 107%

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2023, chili exports reached 20 million USD, equivalent to 10,173 tons, an increase of 107% over the same period last year.

According to statistics from Vietnam Pepper Association (VPSA), in December 2023, Vietnam exported 625 tons of chili, earning more than 1.4 million USD, a sharp increase of 45.3% compared to the previous month. In 2023, chili exports reached 20 million USD, equivalent to 10,173 tons, an increase of 107% over the same period last year. This growth is also foundation that helps export turnover of the entire pepper and spice industry to soon complete the target by 2025, thereby reaching about 2 billion USD with a total output of 400,000 - 500,000 tons.
In terms of markets, China and Laos are two main export markets of Vietnamese chili peppers, reaching more than 8,600 tons and 1,100 tons, respectively, accounting for 85% and 10.9% of market share.
In the past two years, Vietnam has been able to officially export chili to China, helping turnover of this fruit skyrocket. Selling price of chili peppers is also much better than in 2022, helping farmers have stable profits.
Currently, the price of chili is fluctuating 38,000-40,000/kg. Particularly for selected export types, the price is from 62,000-65,000 VND/kg; type 2 chili is 58,000-60,000 VND. This level is doubling compared to the same period in 2023.
In 2022, Vietnam exported a total of 4,904 tons of chili with a turnover of up to 11.9 million USD.
Data from Department of Crop Production shows that chili is grown most in the provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh with a total area of over 7,000 hectares and an output of about 100,000 tons a year.
Meanwhile, in Central Highlands, planted area is about 4,000-5,000 hectares with an output of about 60,000 tons a year. Besides, Lang Son is also one of the key chili growing areas; chili growing area in the province reaches more than 1,479 hectares, an increase of 91 hectares compared to 2022 crop year.
According to the survey, wholesale price of chili peppers at the garden is 30,000-35,000/kg, the retail price is 38,000-45,000 VND/kg. This price increased sharply comparing to August 2023 due to demand from Chinese markets, Korea increased sharply.
