DAILY: Vietnamese coffee prices skyrocketed by 1700 VND on December 29

 Friday, December 29,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - On Friday, Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area increased by 1.700 VND to VND 69,100 – VND 69,900 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.

Gia Nghia of Dak Nong provided the maximum price of VND69,900/kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND69,100. Robusta coffee increased to VND69,100 in Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha; to VND69,800 – VND69,900 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND69,800 – VND69,900 in Dak Nong; to VND69,800 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND69,700 – VND69,800 per kg in Gia Lai.
Robusta prices soared while Arabica maintained a good upward momentum in the past session. Expert Nguyen Quang Binh commented that information that Vietnam still lacks 80,000 -150,000 tonnes of coffee to deliver to signed contracts, has had a strong impact on the market.
Mr. Do Ha Nam, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, said that coffee prices have increased to the highest level in the past 30 years, leading to Vietnam having no more coffee to export in June 2023, an unprecedented incident in history.
Besides, there is an unusual decrease in coffee growing area. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, our country currently has over 700,000 hectares of coffee, but Mr. Nam said that the actual number may only be about 600,000 hectares and is continuing to shrink due to compete with other fruit trees such as avocado, durian... which have higher profits.
Unpredictable fluctuations in coffee prices have caused a series of difficulties for exporters. Even in the past year, Vietnam had to import nearly 100,000 tonnes of coffee from Brazil and Indonesia to pay debt for contracts. This is unprecedented in the history of the Vietnamese coffee industry.
In November 2023, Vietnam exported about 200,000 tonnes of coffee but it is estimated that half of this was to pay off debt for the old crop.
