Fruit and vegetable exports fell sharply in November

 Thursday, December 21,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the General Department of Customs, in November, fruit and vegetable export turnover reached nearly 373 million USD, a sharp decrease of 38.8% compared to the previous month.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the reason fruit and vegetable exports dropped sharply at the end of the year was because the main product, durian, has passed the main season. Meanwhile, this item made the largest contribution to the turnover of the fruit and vegetable industry.
Despite the decrease in turnover in November, in general, fruit and vegetable exports still grew impressively in the past 11 months.
Overall, in 11 months, fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly 5.2 billion USD, up by 70.3% over the same period last year. This was the key export product group with the most impressive growth rate.
Notably, even though the year has not yet ended, fruit and vegetable export turnover has set a record with the 5 billion USD mark for the first time.
Regarding the export markets, China continued to hold the No. 1 position with a turnover of more than 3.4 billion USD (as of the end of November), an increase of 149% over the same period last year (equivalent to an increase in turnover of more than 2 billion USD) and accounted for about 65.4% of the total export turnover of this product of countries.
At the end of the year, there is more good news for the fruit and vegetable industry when the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Vietnam) and the General Department of Customs (China) have just signed a Protocol on plant quarantine requirements for fresh watermelon exported from Vietnam to China. The Protocol is a step to promote the official exports of this traditional agricultural product of Vietnam and standardize regulations on agricultural export between the two countries.
According to forecasts, by 2025, China's durian market capacity could reach 20 billion USD and the world's reach 28.6 billion USD. The growth rate of the world durian industry in the period 2019 - 2025 is forecast to be about 7.2%/year. Thus, in the coming time, the durian consumption market will still be very good. Therefore, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association recommends that farmers consider sustainability factors and enhance product and variety quality.
Besides favorable factors, our country's fruit and vegetable industry still faces many difficulties and challenges as more and more countries erect technical barriers.
Recently, Thailand has raised durian export standards, specifically increasing the dryness of durian rice from 32% to 35% and monitoring each shipment to ensure it meets the required standards. This poses many challenges for durian farmers and Vietnamese businesses.
