Rice production and export in the first 10 months of the year

AsemconnectVietnam - According to The General Statistics Office, in the 2023 summer rice crop, Vietnam cultivated 1,544.5 thousand hectares, equal to 99.5% of the previous year’s crop.

As of mid-October, the whole country harvested 1,028.3 thousand hectares of seasonal rice, accounting for 66.6% of the cultivated area and equal to 106.9% of the same period last year, of which Northern localities harvested 699.2 thousand hectares, accounting for 69.5% and equal to 116% and southern localities harvested 329.1 thousand hectares, accounting for 61.1% and equal to 91.6%.
Localities across the country completed summer-autumn rice production with an area of 1,912.8 thousand hectares, down 1.9 thousand hectares compared to the summer-autumn crop in 2022, yield reached 57.6 quintals/ha, an increase of 0.1 quintals/ha; output reached 11 million tonnes, an increase of 173 thousand tonnes.
As of mid-October, localities in the Mekong River Delta cultivated 692.9 thousand hectares of autumn-winter paddy, equal to 106.9% of the same period last year. So far, the region harvested 247 thousand hectares of winter-autumn paddy, made up 35.6% of the total cultivated area and equaled to 88%.
Due to favorable weather, northern localities were taking advantage of planting winter vegetables, so this year’s winter planting progress was faster than the same period last year.
Vietnam exported more than 7.05 million tonnes of rice
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam exported more than 7.05 million tonnes of rice worth $3.95 billion between Jan. – Oct. 2023, up 15.9% in quantity and up 34% in value year on year.
The country’s average price of exported rice during the reviewed period reached $559.5 per tonne, marking a 15.6% increase over the same period last year.
October alone witnessed Vietnamese rice exports reach 635,102 tonnes worth $406.76 million, up 4.9% and 7.7% in quantity and value month on month. The figures represent an annual decline of 10.9% in quantity and an increase of 34% year on year.
According to statistics, the average export price throughout the reviewed period stood at $640.5 per tonne.
The Philippines made up the largest buyer of Vietnamese rice in 10 months with 2.63 million tonnes, while Indonesia and China ranked second and third, with 1.03 million tonnes and 883,967 tonnes, respectively.
