DAILY: Vietnamese coffee prices fell by 500 VND on November 22

 Wednesday, November 22,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - On Wednesday, Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area fell by 500 VND to VND57,100 – VND57,800 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.

Gia Nghia of Dak Nong provided the maximum price of VND57,800/kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND57,100. Robusta coffee decreased to VND57,100 in Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha; to VND57,700 – VND57,800 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND57,400 – VND58,500 in Dak Nong; to VND57,500 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND57,400 – VND57,500 per kg in Gia Lai.
Vietnam’s production of robusta coffee likely shrank this year to the smallest in four years as farmers focused more on growing durians and their attention was drawn away by a local property boom.
The harvest fell more than 7% from the previous year to 1.67 million tons, according to the median estimate of exporters and traders in a Bloomberg survey. Crop expectations gradually declined as the harvest progressed.
The global market for robusta beans — the type used in instant drinks — has grown as roasters and consumers seek cheaper options to cope with high inflation. Prices have also been supported by worries about the impact of weather on some key crops. That’s driven futures for the variety up 36% this year in London to the highest level in more than a decade.
Vietnam’s coffee export earnings hit an all-time-high of US$4.08 billion in coffee year 2022/23, up 3.4% from the previous year, despite a drop in volumes. In the year ending September 2023, the country shipped nearly 1.7 million tonnes of coffee, down 4.5 per cent compared to CY 2021/22.
In 2022/23, Germany was the largest coffee export market of Vietnam with 219,000 tonnes, followed by Italy with 156,000 tonnes, the US with 143,000 tonnes, Japan with 112,000 tonnes, Russia with 107,000 tonnes, Spain with 100,000 tonnes, Belgium with 73,000 tonnes, and Algeria with 64,000 tonnes.
The UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement and the UK’s participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership have been creating additional competitive advantages for Vietnamese coffee in the market, said Nguyen Canh Cuong, trade counsellor at Vietnam’s Embassy to the UK, quoted by VNS.
