Vietnam’s CPI in October and CPI in Hanoi and HCMC
Tuesday, November 21,2023AsemconnectVietnam - The consumer price index (CPI) in October increased 0.08% from the last month and 3.59% from a year earlier, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
Increased education fees and rice prices are blamed for the CPI rise. Meanwhile, core inflation in the month rose 4.38% compared to the same period last year.
According to the GSO, nine of the 11 groups of goods and services saw price hikes including education services (up 2.25%), housing and building materials (0.27%), water ( 0.48%), house repairing services (0.29%), drinks and tobacco (0.15%), restaurants and food services ( 0.06%), and household appliance (0.03%).
Meanwhile, telecommunications and transportation saw a drop of 0.11% and 1.51% respectively.
The GSO pointed out that core inflation in October increased by 0.09% over the previous month, up 3.43% over the same period last year. On average, in the first ten months of 2023, core inflation increased by 4.38% compared to the same period in 2022, higher than the general average CPI increase of 3.2%.
The main reason is that the average domestic petrol price in the ten months of 2023 decreased by 13.24% over the same period last year, and gas prices decreased by 8.55%.
Hanoi’s ten-month CPI increases by 1.51% year on year
Hanoi's consumer price index (CPI) in the first ten months of 2023 increased by 1.51% year on year, the municipal Statistics Department has reported.
According to the department, nine of the 11 groups of goods and services saw price hikes in the January-October period, including beverage and tobacco, up 3.45%; restaurant and catering services 3.23%; apparel, headwear and footwear 1.68%; culture, entertainment and tourism 1.55%; housing, electricity, water, and construction materials 1.37%; equipment and home appliances 0.94%; education 0.37%; medicine and health services 0.34%; and other goods and services 4.25%.
In the period, prices declined in two categories – transportation down 2.38%; and postal and telecommunications services down 0.62%.
In October alone, the city's CPI rose by 0.09% from the previous month and surged by 4.16% as compared to the figure in the same period last year.
Seven out of the 11 groups of goods and services witnessed price increases from the previous month, including the categories of housing, electricity, water, and construction materials; restaurant and catering services; culture, entertainment and tourism; apparel, headwear and footwear; beverage and tobacco; medicine and health services; and other goods and services.
Hanoi has introduced numerous programmes to bolster tourism development and stimulate consumption in order to contribute to the capital city’s socio-economic development.
HCM City’s October CPI increased by 0.37% month on month
The consumer price index (CPI) in October in Ho Chi Minh City increased by 0.37% from September, with rises seen in the prices of seven out of 11 groups of commodities used to calculate the index, the city’s Statistic Office reported on October 30.
The highest increase of 7.16%, was seen in education services. Other groups with price hikes include beverages and tobacco (0.36%); garment, headwear and footwear (0.08%); and housing, power, water, fuel and building materials (0.05%).
Meanwhile, groups with falling prices include restaurants and food services (0.03%), transportation (4.63%), and telecommunication (0.04%).
According to the office, the average CPI in the first 10 months of the year went up 3.43% from the same period last year, with rises seen in nine groups of commodities except for transport services (down 2.86%) and post-telecom (down 1.70%).
In October, the gold price index increased by 1.53% compared to the previous month. In the first 10 months of 2023, the gold price increased by 0.94% over the same period last year. Meanwhile, the USD price index increased by 1.22% over the previous month and on average, it increased by 2,961% over the same period.
