AsemconnectVietnam - In August of 2023, Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US and EU accelerated again with turnover increasing by 2% and 37% respectively over the same period last year.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in August of 2023, Vietnam's tuna exports reached more than 87 million USD, down by 5% compared to the same period of 2022. This was the lowest decrease since the beginning of 2023 until now.
Totally in the first 8 months of this year, Vietnam’s tuna exports reached 545 million USD, down by 25% over the same period last year.
In August of this year, Vietnam’s tuna exports to main markets had many fluctuations. The highlight was the growth of the US market after a period of continuous decline.
The data showed that tuna export turnover to the US in the month increased slightly by 2% over the same period last year, mainly thanks to the growth of canned tuna (+24% over the same period).
However, due to a high decline in the first months of the year, in the first 8 months of 2023, tuna exports to the US still decreased by 45% over the same period, reaching nearly 208 million USD.
In the EU, this market is also showing acceleration again when Vietnam's tuna export turnover here has increased by 37% over the same period last year.
In contrast, the country’s tuna exports to Israel decreased sharply in August with a decrease of 57% over the same period last year, despite the previous good growth. In particular, the exports of processed and canned tuna products to this market recorded a decrease of up to 82% over the same period last year. However, thanks to good growth in the past, cumulatively in the first 8 months of 2023, tuna exports to Israel still increased by 50%.
In the CPTPP market block, the exports to member markets have not yet shown signs of improvement. The exports to Japan, Canada and Mexico all fell sharply in August with -53%, -49% and -14 respectively over the same period.
Up to now, according to VASEP, Vietnam's tuna exports are gradually narrowing the decrease compared to the same period last year. However, it is very difficult for exports to key markets such as the US, Japan or Canada to return to the level of the same period last year.
However, the decline in world raw tuna prices is boosting importers' demand at the end of the year. Therefore, it is expected that tuna exports in the coming months will return to the same level as the same period of 2022.
