Fruit and vegetable exports to exceed the whole of 2022 in 9 months

 Tuesday, September 26,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - It is expected that by the end of the third quarter of 2023, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports may earn 4.134 billion USD, exceeding the total exports of fruit and vegetable in the whole year of 2022 and higher than the record number of 2018.

The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association informed that it is expected that fruit and vegetable exports in September of 2023 to reach nearly 587 million USD, an increase of 33.4% over the same period of 2022. Totally in the first 9 months of 2023, the total fruit and vegetable exports may reach 4.134 billion USD, an increase of 69.1% over the same period of 2022.
This result may exceed the fruit and vegetable export turnover of the whole year 2022 of 3.34 billion USD. This result will also exceed the record export figure of the fruit and vegetable industry in 2018 of 3.81 billion USD.
In the top 10 largest export markets of the fruit and vegetable industry, in addition to China, the Japanese, South Korean, Dutch and United Arab Emirates markets have positive growth; while the United States, Thailand, and Australia saw decrease.
The Import-Export Department (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) stated that fruit and vegetable exports continued to record high growth rates thanks to a sharp increase in export value to the Chinese market.
In August of 2023, the export value to the Chinese market reached 266.3 million USD, an increase of 186.3% compared to August of 2022. In the first 8 months of 2023, the export value of fruits and vegetables to the Chinese market reached 2.3 billion USD, an increase of 134% over the same period of 2022.
The other several markets, such as South Korea, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates also recorded positive growth rates.
Notably, in the third and fourth quarters of 2023, the whole country will have nearly 7.6 million tonnes of key fruits of all kinds for consumption. Meanwhile, according to annual practice, fruit and vegetable exports often reach high levels in the last months of the year thanks to increased market demand. Therefore, the abundant supply of fruit will satisfy export orders in the near future.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - forecasts that Vietnam’s exports of fruits and vegetables for the whole year of 2023 can bring in more than 5.5 billion.
However, the country’s exports of fruits and vegetables to the main export market, China, requires attention. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development received a number of notices from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) related to violations of plant quarantine requirements of shipments of bananas, jackfruit, mangoes, longan, dragon fruit and durian exported from Vietnam to the Chinese market. Notably, in mid-August 2023, China conducted an inspection of Vietnamese fresh coconut growing areas and packaging facilities.
In cases of violation of plant quarantine regulations as notified by China, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will temporarily suspend the relevant codes to investigate the cause and apply measures for appropriate remediation.
Therefore, in addition to promoting the issuance of growing area codes, localities also need to control well to minimize the situation of cheating on growing area codes, affecting the brand of exported Vietnamese vegetables and fruits.
Along with that, manufacturing enterprises also need to increase the application of production models according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to fully meet China's increasingly strict quarantine regulations.
