Thursday, July 27,2023AsemconnectVietnam - On Thursday, Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area rose by 300 VND to VND66,700 – VND67,400 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.
Gia Nghia of Dak Nong provided the maximum price of VND67,400/kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND66,700/kg. Robusta coffee increased to VND66,700 in Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha; to VND67,700 – VND67,600 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND67,300 – VND67,400 per kg in Dak Nong; to VND67,000 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND67,000 - VND67,100 per kg in Gia Lai.
Vietnam expects its coffee exports this year to hit a fresh record high as global production will fall short of demand, resulting in soaring prices amid El Nino-induced extreme weather conditions, Vietnam News Agency reports.
The El Nino weather pattern was likely to form in Vietnam during the last half of the summer, with a 70% to 80% chance of the phenomenon persisting into 2024, said Mai Van Khiem, head of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecast.
El Nino typically suppresses rainfall, thus the average rainfall across Vietnam is expected to drop 25% to 50%, the expert said.
Thus El Nino-related water shortages can severely affect the regions in Vietnam which produce key agricultural export products, including coffee.
Vietnam is the world’s largest robusta supplier with production on a steady rise from some 78,000 tonnes in 1990 to about 1.84 million tonnes in the 2021 and 2022 season, according to the Vietnam Coffee-Cocoa Association.
Vietnam's total coffee exports within the first nine months of the 2022–2023 crop year (from October 2022 to September 2023) reached 1.44 million tonnes or over 24 million bags of coffee. Accordingly, the total export turnover reached 3.38 billion USD. This is an increase of 2% in volume and 6.6% in turnover over the same period in 2022.
