Exports of cassava and products to Japan increased by 1,285 % in first 5 months of 2023
Thursday, June 29,2023AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 5 months of 2023, the export of cassava and cassava products to the Japanese market increased by 1,285 percent in volume and 947.4% in value over the same period in 2022.
According to statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in May 2023, Vietnam exported 192,000 tonnes of cassava and cassava products, worth of 80.22 million USD, down by 25.7% in volume and decreased by 29.5% in value over the same period last year. This is the third consecutive month of decline compared to the same period of 2022.
In May of 2023, the average export price of cassava and cassava products was at 415.8 USD/tonne, up by 3.8% compared to April of 2023, but down by 5.1% compared to May of 2022.
Totally in the first 5 months of 2023, the export of cassava and cassava products reached 1.36 million tonnes, worth of 528.56 million USD, down by 6.1% in volume and 15.9% in value compared to same period of 2022.
In the first 5 months of 2023, although the total export volume decreased, but the export of cassava and cassava products to a market still grew strongly in both volume and value compared to the same period in 2022, in which remarkable I mean markets, such as Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan market.
In which, the exports to the Japanese market reached 2.39,000 tonnes, worth of 1.22 million USD, up to 1,285 percent in volume and 947.4% in value over the same period of 2022.
In May of 2023, China was still the largest export market for Vietnam's cassava and cassava products, accounting for 88.67% of the country's total cassava exports.
According to the statistics figures of China Customs, Vietnam was the second largest market to supply cassava chips to China in the first four months of 2023, Vietnam's market share of cassava chips accounted for 12.55% of the total China's import of cassava chips, higher than 10.71% in the first 4 months of 2022.
Vietnam was the second largest market supplying tapioca starch to China. Vietnam's tapioca starch market share in China's total imports accounted for 36.11%, lower than 36.15% in the first four months of 2022.
In the domestic market, the price of fresh cassava roots in Tay Ninh is about 1,000-1,200 VND/kg higher than the same period last year. This year, with prolonged hot weather, the possibility of cassava production in the 2023/24 crop of the Northern mountainous region and the North Central region will decrease significantly compared to the previous year. At processing plants, the inventory of cassava raw materials is low, so the selling price is high.
The inventories of tapioca starch in China are low, FOB Bangkok Thailand prices are high, so Chinese customers also accept to buy at quite high prices, even in the hot season. Chinese customers ask to buy more tapioca starch in Tay Ninh, the price fluctuates around 520 USD/tonne (FOB price).
