AsemconnectVietnam - On Monday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged at VND70,000 – 72,000 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.vn.

In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the maximum price for pepper stayed at VND72,000 per kg, while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price to VND70,000 per kg. Farmers in Binh Phuoc sold pepper for VND71,500 per kilogram, in Dong Nai province for VND70,000 per kilogram, and in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces for VND71,000 per kilogram.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association, in May 2023, Vietnam exported 28,759 tonnes of pepper of all kinds (of which black pepper of 25,850 tonnes and white pepper of 2,909 tonnes), up by 9.4% compared to the previous month.
Total export turnover reached 89.6 million USD(of which black pepper of 76.8 million USD and white pepper of 12.8 million USD), up by 7.5% compared to the previous month.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association, the domestic pepper market has had positive developments since the last week of April 2023 until now. The price increased from 66,000 VND/kg to 76,000 VND/kg in the 2nd week of May before falling slightly again. The sudden increase in exports to China in March and April is one of the main reasons for the increase in pepper prices.
This price is still not attractive enough for farmers to replant new crops. In the context of having to compete with other crops that are more competitive in terms of profit, the above price level caused a cautious reaction, reducing orders from importers from Europe and the United States.
The reason is that the price is not competitive and the expectation that the supply from Indonesia in July will help the market cool down, the inventory from previous years is still from EU and US importers.
Meanwhile, the World Pepper Community (IPC) said that Indonesia recorded the highest production decline in 2022, with a decrease of about 22% compared to 2021, forecasted to decrease by 15% in 2023. This decline may cause the market share of Indonesia's pepper production to the world to decrease from 12% in 2022 to 10% in 2023.
It can be seen that the harvest and production information of Indonesia next month has important implications for the direction of world pepper in the medium term. IPC in its latest report said that the pepper market this week showed mixed reactions, as only Indonesian pepper prices were reported with an uptrend.
Thus, right before the harvest, pepper prices in the market are increasing. With the perception that output is decreasing, this price increase will continue in other countries, including Vietnam.
