Vietnam’s exports and imports of seafood in April and the first four months of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - The preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs showed that, in the first 4 months of 2023, Vietnam’s exports of seafood products reached over 2.57 billion USD, down by 29.6% compared to the first 4 months of 2022.

Also in the first four months of 2023, Vietnam’s imports of seafood of all kinds reached nearly 856.39 million USD, up by 13.4% compared to the first four months of 2022.

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s exports of aquatic products in April of 2023 decreased slightly by 3.1% compared to March of 2023 and sharply decreased by 34.3% compared to April of 2022, reaching over 743.06 million USD. In general, in the first 4 months of 2023, the exports of this group of products reached over 2.57 billion USD, down by 29.6% compared to the first 4 months of 2022. Particularly, seafood exports by foreign-invested enterprises (FDI) accounted for 10.5% of the total export turnover of this commodity group of the country, reaching 268.79 million USD, down by 8.2%.
Leading seafood export markets in April and the first four months of 2023
Japan was leading the list of the country’s seafood export markets, accounted for 17.3% of the total export turnover of this commodity group of the country, reaching over 443.85 million USD, down by 9.5% compared to the first 4 months of 2022. In April of 2023 alone, the figure reached nearly 121.79 million USD, down by 10.2% compared to March of 2023 and down by 14.8% compared to April of 2022.
The second place in turnover was the US market, accounting for 16%, reaching nearly 411.68 million USD, a sharp decrease of 51.6%. In April of 2023 alone, the exports to this market reached 128.65 million USD, a slight increase of 0.1% compared to March of 2023 but a sharp decrease of 53.3% compared to April of 2022.
The next was China. In April of 2023, the country’s exports of seafood to China increased by 11.4% compared to March of 2023 but decreased by 40.4% compared to April of 2022, reaching over 125.55 million USD. In the first 4 months of 2023, the exports to this market decreased by 32% compared to the first 4 months of 2022, reaching over 363.18 million USD, accounting for 14.1% of the total export turnover of this commodity group of the country.
The seafood exports to the FTA RCEP market in the first 4 months of 2023 decreased by 20% compared to the first 4 months of 2022, reaching over 1.35 billion USD, accounting for 52.5% of the total turnover; while the exports to the FTA CPTTP market decreased by 22.2%, reaching over 704.19 million USD, accounting for 27.4%; and the exports to the Southeast Asian market accounted for 8.4% of the total turnover, reaching over 215.11 million USD, down by 10.5%.
Vietnam’s seafood imports in April and the first 4 months of 2023
According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s imports of seafood of all kinds in the first four months of 2023 reached nearly 856.39 million USD, up by 13.4% compared to the first four months of 2022.
Particularly in April 2023, the import turnover of this group of goods reached nearly 193.61 million USD, down by 21.4% compared to March of 2023 and down by 8.2% compared to April of 2022.
In the first 4 months of 2023, India, Norway, Indonesia, China and Chile were the main markets supplying seafood to Vietnam; in which, the imports from India lead in turnover, reaching 131.17 million USD, accounting for 15.3% of the total import turnover of this commodity group of the country, a sharp increase of 53.4% compared to the first 4 months of last year. In April of 2023 alone, the imports of seafood from this market reached 22.71 million USD, down by 38.7% compared to March of 2023 and down by 23.2% compared to April of 2022.
Norway ranked second, the imports from this market in April of 2023 decreased by 20.7% compared to March of 2023 but increased slightly by 1.9% compared to April of 2022, reaching 24.5 million USD, bringing the total import turnover of the first 4 months of 2023 to 94.39 million USD, accounting for 11%, up by 24.2% compared to the first 4 months of 2022.
The next was the Indonesian market with 74.93 million USD in the first 4 months of 2023, accounting for 8.8%, up by 16.5%; China reached 73.26 million USD, accounting for 8.6%, up by 20.1%; Chile reached 54.7 million USD, accounting for 6.4%, a strong increase of 106.3 %.
