DAILY: Vietnamese coffee prices rose by 1200 VND on May 23
Tuesday, May 23,2023
AsemconnectVietnam - On Tuesday, Robusta coffee prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands, the country's largest coffee-growing area rose by 1200 VND to VND60.700 - VND61.300 per kg compared to Yesterday due to lack of domestic supply, according to Kinhtedothi.com.
The sharp increase in coffee prices made the purchasing power of most coffee exporters weak, due to the lack of capital in the context of high interest rates and erratic exchange rate fluctuations.
Cư M'gar of Dak Lak provided the maximum price of VND61.100/kg, while traders in Lam Dong province offered the lowest price of VND60.700/kg. Robusta coffee increased to VND60.700 per kg in Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha; to VND61.000– VND61.100 per kg in Dak Lak; to VND61.200 – VND 61.300 per kg in Dak Nong; to VND60.900 per kg in Kon Tum, and to VND60.900- VND61.000 per kg in Gia Lai.
Statistics from the Vietnam General Department of Customs showed that Vietnam’s coffee export totalled more than 634,000 tonnes from the beginning of this year to April 15, lower than the result of 663,816 tonnes of the same period last year.
The drop in export volume occurred in the context that global coffee prices were at a high level, pushing up domestic prices to around VND52,000 per kg, a record high, according to giacaphe.com.
Still, in the long term, Vietnam’s coffee industry should aim for more sustainable export.
While coffee export was narrowing down, farmers in Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) tended to cut down coffee trees to grow durian as China had allowed the official import of durian from Vietnam.
Another problem was that Vietnam mainly exported coffee in raw forms, which must be tackled to increase added value.
