DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices remained unchanged on April 17
Monday, April 17,2023AsemconnectVietnam - On Monday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged at VND63,000 – 66,000 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi,vn.
In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the maximum price for pepper rose to VND66,000 per kg, while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price stayed at VND63,000 per kg. Farmers in Binh Phuoc sold pepper for VND65,000 per kilogram, Dong Nai province for VND63,500 per kilogram and in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces for VND64,000 per kilogram.
Last week, the International Pepper Community said that the pepper market had mixed reactions when only Malaysian domestic black pepper prices reported a decrease.
The April 2023 report has just been published by Nedspice Group, stating that the harvest is nearing completion in Vietnam, while Cambodia is at its peak. Harvests in Indonesia, Malaysia and southern Brazil will follow in the next 3-4 months.
In the coming years, Vietnam will have a negative trend in terms of the area and domestic output of Vietnam's pepper. Nedspice Group cites almost no new planting area in recent years in Vietnam. Farmers are turning to more profitable crops like durian and passion fruit.
A similar situation occurred in many other countries, resulting in global production continuing to fall below global demand, leading to reduced inventory levels in key exporting countries.
In terms of supply, Nedspice Group said, Vietnam has exported 76,000 tons of pepper since the beginning of the year, up 36% compared to 2022. In which, exports to China increased dramatically. According to Nedspice Group, the above data shows that most of this year's crop has already been sold. Thus, the supply is no longer as abundant as before.
Meanwhile, production in Brazil has increased over the years, but exports will decrease by 8% in 2022. This is due to farmers hoarding pepper in the hope of better prices.
And Indonesia's output is falling, with Bangka and Lampung's crops estimated to be down 10-15% per year. Indonesia's expected output now stands at 40,000 tons, while domestic consumption is about 17,000 tons, and about 20,000 tons for export.
Nedspice Group recognizes that many farmers in Vietnam, Indonesia and Brazil are shifting from growing pepper to more profitable crops. In Vietnam, farmers are switching to crops such as durian, passion fruit and coffee. In Indonesia, they are turning to palm, rubber and coffee. Likewise, in Brazil, farmers are focusing on coffee instead of pepper.
The continued decline in global production has led to a decrease in global stock levels. Demand is expected to outpace supply in the second half of this year. Therefore, the increasing momentum of pepper until the end of the year is relatively clear.
