DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices fell by 500 VND on April 4

 Tuesday, April 4,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - On Tuesday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands fell by 500 VND to VND63,000 – 65,500 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi,vn.

In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the maximum price for pepper stayed at VND65,500 per kg, while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price at VND63,000 per kg. Farmers in Binh Phuoc sold pepper for VND65,000 per kilogram, Dong Nai province for VND63,500 per kilogram and in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces for VND64,000 per kilogram.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association, pepper exports in the first half of March 2023 reached 16,670 tonnes worth 37.8 million USD. Harvest of the new crop is coming to the final stage with a decrease in output, while inventories are also not abundant.
The Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association said that domestic pepper prices were stable last week. Meanwhile, the price of Vietnamese pepper traded on the international market decreased after 4 weeks of stability.
The Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association added that pepper prices in the US market have been quiet recently after the Fed raised interest rates by 0.25% in the hope of reducing inflation. As a result, the market is expected to reverse in the short term.
Pepper used to be likened to black gold due to its high profit. However, in recent years, this crop has gradually lost its competitive advantage due to crop failure due to erratic changes in weather.
Previously, pepper was among the top in terms of profits, many gardeners collected billions of dong/ha of pepper. However, in the past 3-4 years, erratic weather is the main reason for the sharp decrease in pepper productivity. Along with that, the price of pepper continuously decreased, causing farmers to race to cut down this crop because of losses.
This year's crop is coming to an end with most growers at a loss, output decreasing, and acreage shrinking.
