Japanese appetite grows for Vietnamese food

 Tuesday, April 4,2023

AsemconnectVietnam - The 48th International Food and Beverage Exhibition (Foodex Japan 2023) which took place in Tokyo from March 7-10 offered Vietnamese companies an opportunity to seek new customers, sign export contracts, develop distribution networks and increase Japanese market share.

Vietnam’s national pavilion at the event covered some 180sq.m, gathering 25 businesses producing exports to Japan such as vegetables, tubers, raw/processed/canned fruit, pepper, cashew nuts, rice and rice products, seafood, confectionery, milk and milk products. Visitors to the pavilion had a chance to sample these products.
According to the Trade Promotion Center for Agriculture (Agritrade) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam’s pavilion received a large number of corporate visitors interested in canned fruit, cashew nuts, almond, peanuts, pepper, cinnamon, anise, and frozen food processed from shrimp.
Vietnamese companies with a long presence in the Japanese market, such as the PAN Group Joint Stock Company, Luong Quoi Coconut Processing Company, Dong Giao Foodstuff Export Joint Stock Company, and Tran Chau Group Joint Stock Company, welcomed many loyal customers on opening day, reflecting Japanese importers’ trust in Vietnamese farm produce.
Ta Duc Minh, Vietnamese Trade Counselor in Japan, said that processed fruit and vegetables such as baby corn, husked soybean, beans and spinach, meat bologna, soy sauce and chili sauce attracted Japanese importers.
Vietnamese processed food products meet Japanese food safety and quality standards. Many kinds of Vietnamese processed food such as meat bologna and instant noodles are made in Japan for distribution by Japanese supermarkets and retail chains.
According to Ta Duc Minh, Chin-su chili wasabi sauce and soy sauce made with Japanese fermentation technology and seasoning seeds extracted from mushrooms and seaweed made their debut at Foodex Japan.
“Japan, the US and the EU have been our traditional markets for a long time. We consider major exhibitions like Foodex Japan an opportunity to popularize our products and re-position Vietnamese food and farm produce in the international market,” said Nguyen Thi Tra My, CEO of the PAN Group. “In the past, Vietnam was known as a country with high agricultural output, but the quality of farm produce was not high. We want to prove that today Vietnam has many deeply processed food and farm products which can compete with products of any other country in the world market,” she added.
