Rice exports reached more than 893,000 tonnes in 2 months
Thursday, March 16,2023AsemconnectVietnam - In the first 2 months of this year, Vietnam’s rice exports reached more than 893,000 tonnes, worth 472 million USD; decreased by 8.1% in volume but increased by 1% in value over the same period last year.
According to the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s rice exports in February of 2023 reached more than 534,000 tonnes, worth of more than 286 million USD. Totally in the first two months of the year, the country’s rice exports reached more than 893,000 tonnes, worth of 472 million USD; decreased by 8.1% in volume but increased by 1% in value over the same period last year.
However, the average export price of rice in the first two months of 2023 was estimated at 528.5 USD/tonne, up by 9.86% over the same period of 2022.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, rice was one of the commodities with high export prices in the first two months of the year compared to the same period last year.
Mr. Phan Van Chinh, Director of the Import-Export Department – under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that the reopening of the Chinese market is a positive signal for rice exporters in 2023. However, the rice export markets are still facing with potential difficulties related to high sea freight rates, high input prices for rice production as well as conflicts in some regions of the world that may affect the prices of other food commodities.
In February of 2023, the country’s exports of rice to the Philippines' main market increased sharply by over 111.4% in volume and 117.7% in turnover compared to January of 2023, reaching 273,331 tonnes, equivalent to 140.49 million USD. The figure also decreased by 10.4% in volume, increased by 0.25% in turnover, and increased by 11.9% in price compared to February of 2022.
Rice exports to the Chinese market in February of 2023 also increased strongly by 121.8% in volume and 117% in turnover compared to January of 2023, reaching 105,196 tonnes, equivalent to 61.61 million USD. In comparison with February of 2022, the figure also increased by 134.4% in volume, and by 182.2% in turnover.
In the first two months of 2023, the country's rice export volume reached over 893,256 tonnes, equivalent to nearly 472.43 million USD, down by 8.3% in volume, but up slightly by 0.7% in turnover compared to the same period last year. In the first 2 months of 2022, the average price reached 528.9 USD/tonne, up by 9.8%.
The Philippines still ranked first in Vietnam's rice consumption, accounting for 45% of the total volume and 43.3% of the country's total rice export turnover, reaching 401,975 tonnes, equivalent to 204.69 million USD, the average price was 509.2 USD/tonne, down by 25.5% in volume, down by 18.2% in turnover but up by 9.7% in price compared to the first two months of 2022.
Chinese market followed, accounting for 17% of the total volume and 19% of the total turnover, reaching 152,640 tonnes, equivalent to 90.01 million USD, the average price was 589.7/tonne, a sharp increase of 86.4 % in volume and 120.5 % increase in turnover; and the price increased by 18.3% over the same period of 2022.
The Indonesian market ranked third with 143,786 tonnes, equivalent to 67.31 million USD, priced at 468 USD/tonne, a sharp increase of 33,732% in volume and 30,355% increase in turnover but down by 10% in price over the same period of 2022, accounting for 16 % of the total volume and accounted for 14.3% of the total rice export turnover of the country.
Meanwhile, the exports to RCEP FTA markets reached 737,657 tonnes, equivalent to 384.44 million USD, up by 6.9% in volume, up by 18% in turnover. The exports to FTA CPTTP markets reached 41,596 tonnes, equivalent to 23.5 million USD, down by 39.6% in volume and 31.9% in turnover.
