AsemconnectVietnam - From September 16-30, 2026, WTO members issued 33 SPS notifications, including many regulations related to additives, MRLs, and quarantine.
According to a summary by Vietnam SPS Office, between September 16 and 30, 2026, members of World Trade Organization (WTO) issued 33 notifications on food safety and phytosanitary measures (SPS). Of these, 11 were draft notifications open for comments and 22 were in effect.
Notably, European Union (EU) published 10 notifications related to animal feed additives. These notifications focused on licensing and re-licensing of certain additives such as lavender alcohol extract, thyme essential oil, peppermint alcohol extract, nutmeg essential oil, basil alcohol and L-valine. EU also issued regulations for licensing certain microbial preparations and perlite as feed additives for certain animal species; and amended and supplemented regulations on use of sepiolite clay and choline chloride in animal feed.
The United States has announced a food additive amendment proposing revisions to regulations on coloring agents, including allowing use of calcium sulfate in certain food groups such as coated candies, powdered milk, whey products, cream powders, coatings and fillings for baked goods. Malaysia announced a draft amendment to the 1985 Food Regulations, which adds sweeteners to definition of food additives, specifies technical requirements for monk fruit extract and adjusts some regulations on yeast extract products.
In Japan, a draft amendment to regulations on animal feed and feed additives proposes allowing the use of guanidinoacetic acid at a maximum addition level of 0.12% in feed for pigs and poultry, excluding laying hens. Meanwhile, South Korea is drafting amendments to veterinary hygiene requirements for processed animal protein-containing animal feed, adding a heat treatment requirement for poultry products to control the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
Ukraine has six notifications related to food safety, veterinary drugs and plant quarantine. Notably, these include drafts on good practices in distribution of veterinary drugs; amendments to safety and quality requirements for milk and dairy products; requirements for natural mineral water and spring water; and several provisions on veterinary documentation and inspection, sampling and plant quarantine assessment.
Canada issued two notifications related to aquatic animals and maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides. One of these, a revised list of susceptible aquatic species, will take effect on October 5, 2026. Canada also issued MRLs for the active ingredient Chlorantraniliprole in tea, palm oil, oil palm fruit and avocado.
In Brazil, a draft proposal suggests revising 25 monographs in catalog of active ingredients for pesticides, biocides used in sanitation and wood preservatives. Content focuses on adjusting and supplementing MRLs, withdrawal periods, crops, methods of use and residue definitions for many active ingredients. Brazil also issued phytosanitary requirements for imported Liatris propagation material from all sources.
SPS Vietnam Office requests that agencies, organizations and associations review the content of announcements and submit comments in English and Vietnamese (if any) at least three days before deadline of each announcement so that the Office can compile them and send them for publication.
