Imports of computers and components reached nearly $189 billion in 9 months
Wednesday, October 14,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - The preliminary statistics indicated that Vietnam's imports of computers and components continued to surge in September of 2026, reflecting strong demand for the components, raw materials, and input equipment required for domestic electronics and computer manufacturing.
In September of 2026, the import value of computers and components reached $27.13 billion, up by 5.94% from August of 2026 and a staggering 94.71% compared to September of 2025. This near-doubling of import value year-on-year signals rapid expansion in import activity and reflects the continued scaling up of Vietnam's electronics production and exports. With exports for the same month totaling $22.56 billion, imports exceeded exports by approximately $4.57 billion, highlighting the computer and component sector's significant reliance on imported raw materials, components, and electronic products.
In the first nine months of 2026, the total import value of computers and components reached $188.94 billion, a sharp increase of 71.8% compared to the same period of 2025. The growth rate of imports significantly outpaced the 59.59% growth in exports, indicating that the demand for input imports is rising faster than the expansion of export value. This serves as both a positive signal regarding the scaling up of production and an indicator of the Vietnamese electronics industry's heavy reliance on external supply chains for raw materials and components. China remained the largest source of imports, with a value of $9.74 billion in August, a year-on-year increase of 97.35%. The cumulative figure for the first eight months reached $59.26 billion, up by 76.76% and accounting for 36.66% of the total import value. South Korea ranked second at $43.36 billion (up by 79.96%, representing a 26.83% share), followed by Taiwan at $26.85 billion (up by 79.35%, representing a 16.61% share). Together, these three markets, China, South Korea, and Taiwan, accounted for approximately 80.1% of total import value during the eight-month period, highlighting the heavy concentration of Vietnam's computer and component supplies within East Asia.
The ASEAN region continued to show solid growth; August imports reached $1.35 billion, up by 6.58% from the previous month and 59.10% year-on-year. Cumulative imports from ASEAN for the eight-month period totaled $8.80 billion, a rise of 57.39%, representing 5.45% of the total import value. Within this region, imports from Malaysia reached $3.82 billion (up 48.35%), Thailand reached $1.86 billion (up by 60.39%), and Singapore reached $1.81 billion (a sharp increase of 266.70%). Conversely, imports from Indonesia fell by 39.75%, while those from the Philippines rose by 9.89%. These results indicate that ASEAN is playing an increasingly significant role in supplying electronic components and equipment for domestic production; however, the scale remains substantially lower than that of major suppliers such as China, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The imports from the EU reached US$377.99 million, up by 35.30% month-on-month and 17.21% year-on-year; the accumulated figure for the first eight months stood at US$2.65 billion, a 14.93% increase, accounting for 1.64% of the total import value. Within the EU, Ireland was the largest supplier at US$1.83 billion, despite a 10.23% year-on-year decline; it was followed by France (US$323.68 million, up by 1,121.63%), Germany (US$267.15 million, up by 91.37%), and Italy (US$114.77 million, up by 742.63%). Although some markets showed rapid growth, the volume of imports from the EU remains relatively small compared to key Asian suppliers.
