Import-export of FDI sector: strong momentum from hi-tech industry
Tuesday, October 13,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - In the first eight months of 2026, the import-export activities within the FDI sector demonstrated positive growth momentum.
The export turnover reached US$299.53 billion (up by 26.99% year-on-year), driven primarily by a surge in the computers, electronic products, and components category (which reached US$100.44 billion, accounting for 33.53% of the total). Conversely, import turnover for this sector stood at US$290.23 billion (up by 40.1%), with a heavy concentration on goods serving production and export, such as electronic components, computers, and machinery, totaling nearly US$190 billion. Overall, a clear divergence in trends is evident: high-tech industries maintained rapid expansion, whereas textiles, footwear, raw materials, and agricultural products experienced slower growth, with performance varying across different stages of production.
Regarding exports, according to statistics from the General Department of Customs, FDI sector exports reached US$299.53 billion in the first eight months of 2026, a 26.99% increase compared to the same period of 2025. During this period, 21 product categories achieved export turnover exceeding US$1 billion, accounting for 93.09% of total export value (including six categories that surpassed US$10 billion, representing 77.67% of the total). Computers, electronic products, and components remained the largest export category for the FDI sector. In the first eight months of 2026, the exports of these items reached US$100.44 billion, a 52.2% increase year-on-year, accounting for 33.53% of the FDI sector's total export turnover.
Textile and garment exports from the FDI sector reached US$17.07 billion during the same eight-month period, up by 3.64% year-on-year. This relatively modest growth indicates that while demand in major markets has improved, it has not yet triggered a significant surge; textile and garment enterprises continue to face pressure regarding pricing, competition, quality, and delivery times, alongside increasingly stringent requirements concerning the environment and sustainable development.
The exports of plastic products totaled US$4.14 billion in the first eight months of 2026, a 16.75% increase compared to the same period of 2025; this sustained growth demonstrates continued demand for plastic products serving both industrial and consumer sectors. Notably, rubber exports in August of 2026 reached US$19.97 million, an increase of 36.85% compared to July of 2026 and 173.86% compared to the same period of 2025. The accumulated rubber exports for the first eight months of 2026 totaled US$90.22 million, a surge of 188.16% year-on-year. Although the export value remains modest, the high growth rate indicates a significant improvement in rubber export performance within the FDI sector compared to the same period of 2025.
Regarding imports, according to Customs statistics, the FDI sector's imports reached US$290.23 billion during the first eight months of 2026, up by 40.1% year-on-year. During this period, 25 commodity groups recorded import values exceeding US$1 billion, accounting for 92.37% of the total import value (with two groups exceeding US$30 billion, representing 65.43% of the total).
Computers, electronic products, and components remained the largest import category for the FDI sector in the first eight months of 2026; the imports in this group totaled US$157.67 billion, a 69.38% increase year-on-year, accounting for 54.33% of the sector's total import value. Imports of machinery, equipment, tools, and other spare parts by the FDI sector reached US$32.24 billion in the first eight months of 2026, an increase of 16.14% compared to the same period of 2025.
The imports of computers, electronic products, and components totaled US$189.91 billion during this eight-month period, accounting for 65.43% of the FDI sector's total import turnover. Overall, the FDI sector's import structure remained heavily focused on goods serving production and exports, particularly in the electronics and high-tech sectors.
In general, the FDI sector's demand for raw material inputs in the textile, garment, and footwear industries remained steady, aligning with production activities and export orders. However, the growth rate for fabrics and accessories remained relatively low, whereas fiber and yarn imports saw higher growth, indicating divergent demand trends across different stages of the production chain. Compared to the electronics sector, the growth rate of imports for textiles, garments, and footwear was significantly lower, reflecting differences in order cycles, capacity expansion, and market outlooks between these industries.
Alongside these key product groups, several other items also recorded notable growth during the first eight months of 2026. Specifically, corn imports reached US$808.1 million (up by 54.16% year-on-year); wheat imports totaled US$553.84 million (up by 26.39%); and imports of household electrical appliances and components reached US$1.29 billion (up by 22.5%). rubber reached US$1.24 billion, up by 23.73%; various types of paper reached US$872.56 million, up by 15.4%; ores and other minerals reached US$984.73 million, up by 15.5%; wood and wood products reached US$883.24 million, up by 10.16%; cameras, camcorders, and components reached US$1.44 billion, up by 4.59% compared to the same period...
