Computers and components: key driver of Vietnam's export growth

 Tuesday, October 13,2026

AsemconnectVietnam - According to the preliminary statistics, Vietnam's exports of computers and components saw explosive growth in September of 2026, reaffirming their status as a major export category and a vital engine for export expansion.

In September of 2026, the export value of computers and components reached US$22.56 billion, a surge of 42.3% compared to August of 2026 and a sharp 113.1% increase year-on-year. This means the monthly export value more than doubled compared to the same period last year. In the first nine months of 2026, the export value totaled US$123.65 billion, up by 59.59% year-on-year. This significant growth highlights the prominent role this category plays in Vietnam's export structure. If the current growth momentum is maintained through the fourth quarter, the total export value for 2026 could set a new record, contributing substantially to the overall growth of goods exports.
The United States remained the largest export market; exports to the US reached US$5.17 billion in August of 2026, a 7.32% decrease from the previous month but a 33.87% increase year-on-year. In the first eight months of the year, the exports to the US totaled US$38.73 billion, up by 48.43% and accounting for 38.33% of the total export value of computers and components. China ranked second, reaching $17.24 billion, a 56.40% increase and accounting for 17.06% of the total; meanwhile, the exports to Hong Kong reached $9.72 billion, up by 41.23%, representing a 9.62% share. Together, these three markets alone accounted for approximately 65% of the total turnover, indicating that Vietnam's exports of computers and components remain heavily concentrated in a few key markets. However, the shares held by the United States and Hong Kong declined slightly compared to the same period in 2025, while China's share increased, signaling a shift in market composition.
The exports to the EU market reached $1.48 billion in August, up by 8.61% from the previous month and 52.46% year-on-year. In the first eight months, the exports to the EU totaled $9.23 billion, a 58.68% increase, accounting for 9.13% of the total turnover, up from 8.69% in the same period of 2025. Within the EU, the Netherlands was the largest export market at $3.19 billion (up by 50.82%), followed by Germany at $1.57 billion (up by 107.75%), the Czech Republic at $1.08 billion (up by 94.93%), Hungary at $671.12 million (up by 140.07%), and Italy at $631.75 million (up by 89.34%).
These results demonstrate robust demand in the European market and suggest significant remaining potential for expanding Vietnam's exports of computers and components to the EU. The ASEAN region continued to emerge as a rapidly growing market. In the first eight months of 2026, the exports of computers and components to ASEAN reached US$5.71 billion, a 98.29% increase, accounting for 5.65% of total export turnover, a significant rise from the 4.31% recorded in the same period of 2025.
Specifically, the exports to Thailand reached US$2.16 billion (up by 114.28%); Singapore reached US$1.68 billion (up by 71.16%); and Malaysia reached US$1.47 billion (up by 151.36%). In August alone, the exports to ASEAN totaled US$1.13 billion, marking a 60.91% increase month-on-month and a 167.94% increase year-on-year. These trends indicate rapidly rising regional demand and highlight ASEAN's increasingly important role in Vietnam's exports of computers and components.
Alongside key markets, numerous other markets also recorded high growth rates, helping to expand export reach. In the eight-month period, the exports to Mexico rose by 139.86%, the UK by 117.03%, Taiwan by 96.77%, Japan by 62.23%, Australia by 72.76%, and Canada by 49.50%. Notably, several markets that are currently smaller in scale demonstrated very high growth rates, such as Saudi Arabia (up by 111.74%), Colombia (up by 117.34%), Peru (up by 265.85%), and Turkey (up by 83.54%). This is a positive signal indicating that Vietnamese enterprises are gradually expanding into markets beyond traditional export hubs, thereby helping to reduce reliance on a few major markets.
