Expectation for fruit and vegetable exports in last months of 2026
Friday, August 14,2026
AsemconnectVietnam - In the first seven months of 2026, fruit production maintained its growth momentum compared to the same period in 2025, driven by expanded harvesting areas and favorable weather conditions.
Most key fruit varieties recorded increased output, helping to ensure supply for both domestic consumption and exports.
Specifically, durian production was estimated at 785,000 tonnes (up by 13.2%); jackfruit at 744,800 tonnes (up by 10.5%); bananas at 1,896,300 tonnes (up by 5.0%); coconuts at 1,560,000 tonnes (up 7.4%); and watermelons at 1,052,500 tonnes (up by 2.8%). Other fruits also maintained steady growth: oranges reached an estimated 844,300 tonnes (up by 4.2%); mangoes 835,000 tonnes (up by 3.9%); dragon fruit 822,400 tonnes (up by 3.1%); and pomelos 480,000 tonnes (up by 3.5%) compared to the same period of 2025.
Strong growth in fruit and vegetable exports
According to preliminary data from the General Statistics Office, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value in July of 2026 was estimated at US$1.07 billion, an increase of 15% from June of 2026 and 40.8% from the same period last year. In the first seven months of 2026, the total export turnover was estimated at US$4.77 billion, a 23.6% increase compared to the same period of 2025.
According to earlier statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover reached US$936 million in June of 2026, up by 31.5% from May of 2026 and 16.6% from the same period the previous year. For the first six months of the year, export turnover totaled US$3.7 billion, a 19.4% increase compared to the same period of 2025.
Durian remained a key export product
Durian continued to be a key export, reaching US$520.8 million in June, an increase of 104.1% from the previous month and 17.6% from the same period in 2025. The total export turnover for durian in the first six months of 2026 exceeded US$1.06 billion, up by 26.4% year-on-year, accounting for 46% of the country's total fresh fruit export turnover. China was the largest market, with turnover reaching US$970 million, up by 37.7% year-on-year and representing 91% of total durian exports; it was followed by Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Papua New Guinea.
Bananas ranked second, with export turnover reaching US$33.8 million in June of 2026; this marked a 15.3% decrease from the previous month but a 32.6% increase compared to the same period of 2025. Accumulated turnover reached US$222.6 million, down by 5.2% year-on-year, accounting for a 9.6% share. China remained the primary consumer market, accounting for 66.7% of total banana export value, followed by South Korea (16.7%) and Japan (8.8% market share).
Dragon fruit ranked third with an export value of $24.4 million, a decrease of 41% compared to May of 2026 and 1.7% compared to the same period of 2025; the total value in the first 6 months of this year reached $282.2 million (down by 2%), representing 12.2% of total fresh fruit exports. China remained Vietnam's largest market for dragon fruit, accounting for 59.3% of total export value, followed by India (8.5%) and the United States (8.5%).
China remained the largest export market
In June of 2026, China continued to be Vietnam's largest market for fruit and vegetable consumption, with export value reaching $621.2 million—an increase of 56.1% from the previous month and 18.1% from the same period of 2025. For the first six months of 2026, exports to this market totaled $2.0 billion, up by 24.7% year-on-year and accounting for 55% of the country's total fruit and vegetable export value. The positive growth of the Chinese market was primarily driven by import demand for tropical fruits; specifically durian, dragon fruit, bananas, fresh coconuts, and mangoes.
Notably, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) has officially recognized 18 additional Vietnamese testing laboratories as qualified to analyze food safety parameters (such as cadmium and Auramine O) for agricultural products, raising the total number of approved facilities from 32 to 50. This development is viewed as a favorable factor that helps shorten document processing times and reduce the risk of border congestion, while also facilitating the export of durian, jackfruit, and various other fruits to this market.
The United States ranks as the second-largest market, with export turnover reaching $59.4 million in June of 2026, an increase of 9.4% month-on-month and 10.2% year-on-year; the accumulated figure stands at $292.1 million, up by 11.7% and accounting for 7.9% of total export turnover.
South Korea ranks third with a turnover of $28.7 million, a decrease of 7.5% from the previous month but a 6.4% increase compared to June of 2025; the accumulated total reached $170.4 million, up by 8.1%, representing 4.6% of the country's total fruit and vegetable export turnover.
The EU remained a bright spot for fruit and vegetable exports, driven by the positive impact of the EVFTA. In June of 2026, export turnover reached US$46.8 million, a 9.8% increase from the previous month and a 37.9% rise year-on-year. The total exports of fruits and vegetables to the EU in the first 6 months of this year reached US$214.4 million, up 31.8% compared to the same period in 2025, accounting for 5.8% of the country's total fruit and vegetable export value. Within the EU, the Netherlands was the largest importer, with a turnover of US$117.0 million (up by 46.8% year-on-year), representing 54.6% of total exports to the bloc. Germany followed with US$58.4 million (up by 47%, accounting for 27.3%), while France accounted for 14.7% of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable exports to the EU.
Overall, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export structure remains heavily concentrated on the Chinese market, which accounted for 55% of total turnover, indicating a high level of reliance on a single export destination. Meanwhile, the exports to the US, the EU, and South Korea continued to show positive growth, though their market shares remained modest. This suggests significant room for expanding exports to high-value markets, which would help mitigate market risks and enhance the sustainability of the fruit and vegetable sector.
Positive outlook for fruit and vegetable exports in the last months of the year
In the third quarter of 2026, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports are projected to maintain their positive growth momentum, laying the groundwork for the industry to aim for a total export value of approximately US$9.5–10 billion for the full year, an increase of 11.8–17.6% compared to 2025.
This growth is primarily driven by recovering import demand in key markets such as China, the United States, the European Union (EU), Japan, and South Korea. Additionally, India's official opening of its market to fresh Vietnamese durian on July 13, 2026, accompanied by more favorable quarantine requirements, is expected to create further growth potential and help diversify export markets.
Domestic supply is also considered relatively abundant as major fruits, including durian (fresh and frozen), bananas, dragon fruit, mangoes, and fresh coconuts enter their peak harvest seasons, ensuring a steady supply for exports during the final months of the year.
The exports of durian, a key product, are expected to see a significant surge; the harvest in the Central Highlands is hitting its peak, while supply from Thailand has dropped sharply following the conclusion of that country's harvest season.
