Cashew nut exports down by double digits

AsemconnectVietnam - Cashew nut exports in the first two months of 2025 decreased in both volume and value. It is forecasted that from April - May onwards, the market will be bustling again.

According to report of Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, export volume of cashew nuts in February 2025 is estimated at 25,000 tonnes with a value of 170.5 million USD, bringing total export volume and value of cashew nuts in the first 2 months of 2025 to 62,400 tonnes and 424.8 million USD, down 31.8% in volume and down 13.7% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Average export price of cashew nuts in the first 2 months of 2025 is estimated at 6,811.5 USD/tonne, up 26.7% over the same period in 2024. Previously, according to data from Customs Department (Ministry of Finance), in January 2025, Vietnam exported 37,360 tonnes of cashew nuts, worth 254.27 million USD, down 31.2% in volume and down 29.9% in value compared to the month 12/2024, down 42.6% in volume and 27.5% in value compared to January 2024.
The United States, the Netherlands and China are the three largest cashew nut consuming markets of Vietnam, accounting for 21.7%, 11.8% and 7.1% market shares respectively. Compared to the same period last year, export value of cashew nuts in January 2025 to the United States market decreased by 32.5%, Chinese market decreased by 76.8%, while the Dutch market increased by 23.5%.
In the group of 15 largest export markets, export value of cashew nuts increased the most in the French market with an increase of 29.9% and decreased the most in the Chinese market with a decrease of 76.8%.
Mr. Bach Khanh Nhut - Vice President of Vietnam Cashew Association (VINACAS) - said that reason for the decrease in cashew nut exports in the first two months of the year is because the market is a bit quiet this year.
Buyers are waiting for the new crop season to begin. In addition, source of goods purchased at the previous time is quite large and warehouses in foreign countries are still in stock, so importers are limiting their purchases.
Commenting on the market in the coming time, Mr. Bach Khanh Nhut said that from April - May onwards, the market will be bustling again, at that time, sellers will sign more contracts.
In 2024, Vietnam exported 730,000 tonnes of processed cashew nuts, bringing in 4.37 billion USD, up 13.3% in volume and 20.2% in value compared to 2023. The average export price is about 6,003 USD/tonne, up 6.1% compared to 2023. Vietnam Cashew Association also forecasts that cashew nut exports will earn about 4.5 billion USD this year.
