Vietnam's coffee export prices increase sharply again
Tuesday, March 25,2025
AsemconnectVietnam - After decreasing at the end of 2024, Vietnam's coffee export prices increased sharply again in the first 2 months of 2025 due to limited supply.
Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics from Customs Department (Ministry of Finance) saying that Vietnam's coffee exports in February 2025 were estimated at 150,000 tonnes, worth 854 million USD, up 11.9% in volume and 17.2% in value compared to January 2025. Compared to February 2024, it decreased by 5.6% in volume but increased by 61.7% in value.
In the first two months of 2025, Vietnam exported 284,000 tonnes of coffee, worth 1.58 billion USD, down 28.4% in volume but up 26.2% in value compared to the same period in 2024, due to increased export prices.
After decreasing at the end of 2024, Vietnam's coffee export prices increased sharply again in the first two months of 2025 due to limited supply. In February 2025, average coffee export price reached 5,695 USD/tonne, up 4.7% compared to January 2025 and up 71.3% compared to February 2024.
In the first two months of 2025, average coffee export price reached 5,575 USD/tonne, up 76.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
In the first month of 2025, Robusta coffee exports decreased by 47.9% in volume and 8.3% in value compared to January 2024, reaching 112,700 tons, worth 562.5 million USD. Proportion of Robusta coffee exports accounted for 77.16% of total value of Vietnam's coffee exports in the first month of 2025, lower than proportion of 84.47% in January 2024.
In January 2025, Vietnam exported 8,300 tonnes of Arabica coffee, worth 49.8 million USD, up 58.2% in volume and 147.2% in value compared to January 2024. Proportion of Arabica coffee exports in total value of Vietnam's coffee exports increased to 6.83% in January 2025, higher than proportion of 2.77% in January 2024.
Notably, processed coffee exports increased by 26.0% compared to January 2024, reaching 116.7 million USD. Proportion of processed coffee exports increased to 16.00% in total value of Vietnam's coffee exports in the first month of 2025, higher than the proportion of 12.75% in January 2024. This is a positive signal for Vietnam's coffee exports, with proportion of processed coffee exported increasing.
In late February 2025, coffee prices on the world market fluctuated in opposite directions, with Robusta coffee prices decreasing, while Arabica coffee prices increased sharply.
Robusta coffee prices decreased due to forecasts of a slight increase in global Robusta coffee output and increased selling pressure from Vietnam due to abundant supply. Meanwhile, investment funds are narrowing their long-term buying positions and demand from roasters has also somewhat decreased. In contrast, Arabica coffee prices are supported by forecasts of lower output in Brazil.
Of which, 2024 drought and heavy pruning reduced Arabica coffee production by 16% to 36.46 million bags. Brazil's coffee exports are forecast to fall by 22% in 2025-26, to 39.24 million bags, due to the fifth consecutive year of poor Arabica production and low inventories. Meanwhile, outlook for Robusta coffee is more positive with output expected to increase by 8% to 23.29 million bags. With these factors, coffee prices may continue to fluctuate strongly in the coming time.
In February 2025, Robusta coffee prices in the domestic market increased to the highest level on February 22, 2025, then adjusted due to weaker demand when businesses completed short-term export orders.
