Vietnam’s seafood exports and imports in first 7 months of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - Seafood exports decreased by 27.3% in first 7 months of 2023, showed the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.

Meanwhile, the country’s imports of seafood in the first 7 months of this year reached nearly 1.5 billion USD, down by 2.8% compared to the first seven months of 2022.

According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s exports of aquatic products in July of 2023 increased by 1.4% compared to June of 2023 but decreased by 17.3% compared to July of 2022, reaching over 778.97 million USD. In general, in the first 7 months of 2023, the export value of this group of products reached over 4.93 billion USD, down by 25.6% compared to the 7 months of 2022.
Leading seafood export markets in July and the first 7 months of 2023
The US market accounted for 17.3% of the country's total export turnover of this commodity group, reaching over 854.16 million USD, down by 41.8% compared to the first seven months of 2022. In July of 2023 alone, the country’s exports of seafood to the U.S reached 146.23 million USD, up by 2% compared to June of 2023 but down by 10.8% compared to July of 2022.
The second place in terms of turnover was the Japanese market, accounting for 17%, reaching nearly 838.97 million USD, down by 11.8% over the same period last year. In July of 2023 alone, the country’s exports to this market reached 125.16 million USD, down by 5.4% compared to June of 2023 and down by 17.3% compared to July of 2022.
The next was the Chinese market. In July of 2023, the country’s exports of seafood to China decreased by 5.5% compared to June of 2023 but increased by 7.9% compared to July of 2022, reaching 115.22 million USD. Totally, in the first seven months of 2023, the exports to this market decreased by 19.3% compared to the first seven months of 2022, reaching over 749.95 million USD, accounting for 15.2% of the country's total export turnover of this commodity group.
Seafood exports to the FTA RCEP market in the first seven months of 2023 decreased by 17.5% compared to the first seven months of 2022, reaching nearly 2.57 billion USD, accounting for 52% of the total turnover; the exports to the FTA CPTTP market decreased by 21.8%, reaching over 1.32 billion USD, accounting for 26.8%. Meanwhile, the exports to the EU market accounted for 10.1% of the total turnover, reaching over 498.66 million USD, down by 35.5%, and the export to the Southeast Asian market accounted for 7.7% of the total turnover, reaching nearly 377.8 million USD, down by 17%.

In the first seven months of 2023, Vietnam’s seafood imports reached nearly 1.5 billion USD, down by 2.8% compared to the first seven months of 2022.
According to the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs, the seafood imports to Vietnam in July of 2023 increased slightly by 0.03% compared to June of 2023 but decreased by 26.8% compared to July of 2022, reaching 220.16 million USD. In the whole 7 months of 2023, the country’s imports of this commodity group were worth nearly 1.5 billion USD, down by 2.8% compared to 7 months of 2022.
Leading seafood import markets in July and the first 7 months of 2023
India was leading the list of the country’s main seafood import markets, accounting for 13.8% of the country's total import turnover of this commodity group, reaching 206.75 million USD, up by 3.7% over the first 7 months of 2022. In July of 2023 alone, the figure reached 29.79 million USD, up by 20% compared to June of 2023 but down by 38% compared to July of 2022.
Norway ranked second with a proportion of 10.8%, reaching over 161.81 million USD, up by 15%. In July of 2023 alone, the imports from this market reached 24.66 million USD, up by 20.3% compared to June of 2023 and up by 21.2% compared to July of 2022. The imports of seafood from Chinese market in July of 2023 decreased by 7% compared to June of 2023 and decreased by 34.9% compared to July of 2022, reaching 15.37 million USD. In the first 7 months of 2023, the country’s total seafood imports from this market decreased by 8.5% compared to the 7 months of 2022, reaching nearly 122.23 million USD, accounting for 8.2% of the total turnover.
The seafood imports from FTA - RCEP markets in the first seven months of 2023 reached 465.83 million USD, down by 11.4% compared to the first seven months of 2022, accounting for 31.1% of the total import turnover of this commodity group of the whole country. The seafood imports from FTA - CPTTP markets reached 228.15 million USD, accounting for 15.3%, up by 7.1%.
Seafood imports from FTA markets of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) reached 72.03 million USD, down by 4.8%. Seafood imports from Southeast Asia reached 185.23 million USD, down by 13% compared to the first seven months of 2022.
