DAILY: Vietnamese pepper prices remained unchanged on August 9
Wednesday, August 9,2023AsemconnectVietnam - On Wednesday, domestic pepper prices in Vietnam's Central Highlands remained unchanged at VND71,000 to VND74,000 per kg compared to Yesterday, according to Kinhtedothi.vn.
In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the maximum price for pepper stayed at VND74,000 per kg, while in Gia Lai province, the lowest price at VND71,000 per kg. Farmers in Binh Phuoc sold pepper for VND73,000 per kilogram, in Dong Nai province for VND71,000 per kilogram, and in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces for VND72,000 per kilogram.
According to the General Statistics Office, in the first 7 months of 2023, Vietnam's pepper exports reached 169,000 tonnes, valued at 542 million USD, up 18.6% in volume, down 15.1% in turnover compared to the same period in 2022. Pepper exports price in this period averaged 3,214 USD/tonne, down 28.4% over the same period in 2022.
Information at the seminar held yesterday (August 8), the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association said that, through evaluation and review of data compared with previous forecasts, pepper output in 2023 of Vietnam is estimated at 190,000 tonnes, up 3.8% compared to 2022.
Previously, in the May 2023 report, this unit gave an estimated output of nearly 200,000 tonnes, up 9.3% compared to 2022. Thus, this year's output still increased compared to last year.
Flooding that took place in July in the Central Highlands, especially in Dak Nong province, has more or less affected the pepper garden if the pepper garden is not treated and drained to avoid flooding and needs further monitoring the situation of the pepper garden after the floods?
However, the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association said that this is not as worrisome as the El Nino phenomenon that will take place at the end of the year and until the beginning of next year. Drought, lack of rain may reduce Vietnam's pepper production next year.
The domestic pepper market had mixed movements, closely reflecting the market. By mid-May, the domestic price was still at 76,000 VND/kg, then the price dropped continuously and is now only around 70,000 VND/kg.
Weak purchasing power from traditional markets such as the US and Europe, plus signs of slowing down from the Chinese market, which has reduced buying since June, in addition to the waiting for the harvest of Brazil and Indonesia is the main reason for the price of pepper to go down.
