Vietnam’s export value hit $ 214.02 billion in 2017

AsemconnectVietnam - In 2017, Vietnam’s export value hit $ 214.02 billion, 21.2 per cent or $ 37.44 billion higher than last year showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs. Of the figure, the export turnover of the FDI sector reached $ 152.19 billion, up by 22.9 per cent or $ 28.31 billion year – on – year.

Telephones and components:Vietnam exported $ 3.9 billion worth of telephones and components in December of 2017 and $ 45.27 billion in the whole year of 2017, up by 31.9 per cent compared with the year of 2016.The main export markets of telephones and components in the period were EU (28 countries) with over $ 11.96 billion, up by 6.4 per cent year – on – year; China with $ 7.15 billion, up by 8 times; South Korea - $ 3.97 billion, up by 45.4 per cent; the U.A.E - $ 3.89 billion, up by 1.6 per cent. Cell phones and accessories were still leading the list of the country’s major export items last year with the export turnover of US$ 45.1 billion, the record high ever, according to the General Statistics Office. The figure was up by 31.4 per cent over the same period of 2016 and accounted for over 21 per cent of the country’s total export turnover in 2017.The country’s cell phones and accessories were exported to many countries around the world, including EU, China, the U.A.E, South Korea and the U.S. According to Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, deputy head of Import and Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, cell phones and accessories still maintained its leading position and actively contributed to the country’s total export growth last year.
Textiles and garments: The country exported nearly $ 2.48 billion worth of textiles and garments in December and $ 26.04 billion in the year of 2017, up by 14.4 per cent and 9.3 per cent, respectively year – on - year.The leading export markets of textiles and garments in 2017 were the U.S with $ 12.28 billion, up by 7.3 per cent year – on – year; EU (28 countries) - $ 3.79 billion, up by 6.3 per cent; Japan - $ 3.11 billion, up by 7.3 per cent; and South Korea - $ 2.64 billion, up by 15.8 per cent compared with the previous year.
Computers, electronic products and components: Vietnam earned $ 2.26 billion from export of computers, electronic products and components in December of 2017, down by 13.7 per cent compared with the same month of 2016. The figure brought the country’s total exports of computers, electronics and components in 2017 to $ 25.94 billion, increased sharply by 36.8 per cent compared with 2016. The major export markets of computers, electronic products and components in the period were China with $ 6.86 billion, up by 69 per cent year – on – year; the E.U - $ 4.61 billion, up by 20.5 per cent; the U.S - $ 3.44 billion, up by 18.7 per cent.
Footwear of all kinds: The export of footwear of all kinds reached $ 1.47 billion in December and $ 14.65 billion in the whole year of 2017, up by 12.7 per cent year – on - year.The country’s top export markets of footwear of all kinds in 2017 were the U.S with $ 5.11 billion, up by 14.1 per cent year – on – year; the E.U (28 countries) - $ 4.65 billion, up by 10.2 per cent; China –$ 1.14 billion, up by 26.1 per cent.
 
Vietnam’s exports of footwear in the first eleven months of 2017 have surpassed the number of 2016; and the exports to all major export markets saw sharp increase. The U.S was leading the list.
Footwear ranked fourth in the list of the country’s major export commodities, after telephones and spare parts; computers and spare parts; and textiles and garments. Vietnam is now the fourth biggest footwear producer in the world after China, India and Brazil; and the third footwear exporter in the world, after China and Italy. Vietnam exported footwear to 45 countries and territories in the world. In 2016, Vietnam exported US$ 13 billion worth of footwear, accounted for 7.4 per cent of the country’s total export turnover and increased by 8.3 per cent over the year 2015. In the first 11 months of 2017, the country’s exports of footwear totaled nearly $ 13.19 billion, up by 13 per cent year – on – year.
The U.S, China, Germany, Belgium, Japan and Britain were the leading footwear export markets of Vietnam. The exports of footwear to the U.S accounted for nearly 35 per cent of the country’s total footwear exports with $ 4.6 billion, up by 14 per cent year – on – year while the exports to China reached $ 1.04 billion, up by 28 per cent; to Germany – up by 33.6 per cent to $ 895.34 million; to Belgium – up by 9.8 per cent to $ 816.89 million; to Japan – up by 10.5 per cent to $ 673.07 million; to Britain – up by 12.9 per cent to $ 635.91 million. Meanwhile, the exports of footwear to EU increased by 10.6 per cent year – on – year to $ 4.15 billion; and to the South East Asian countries – up by 23.3 per cent to $ 237.8 million. The country’s exports of footwear to Indonesia, Singapore and Poland increased sharply by 53.2 per cent; 43 per cent and 42 per cent to $ 39.51 million; $ 60.28 million and $ 27.75 million, respectively.
Machines, equipment, tools and spare parts:  The country earned nearly $ 1.14 billion from export of machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts in December and $ 12.77 billion in 2017, up by 28 per cent over the previous year.The main export markets of machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts in 2017 were the U.S with $ 2.43 billion, up by 14.1 per cent year – on – year; Japan – $ 1.72 billion, up by 9.9 per cent; the EU (28 countries) – nearly $ 1.87 billion, up by 44.6 per cent over 2016.
Farm, forestry and seafood products:Vietnam’s exports of farm, forestry and seafood products were estimated at US$3.13 billion in December of 2017 and $36.37 billion in 2017, representing a year – on - year increase of 13 per cent.Of which, the export value of major farm products was estimated to reach $ 18.96 billion, up by 15.7 per cent from 2016 ($ 15.1 billion), while the exports of major seafood products brought home $ 8.32 billion, up by 18 percent and major forestry products brought home $ 7.97 billion, up by 9.2 percent year – on - year. 
The country’s exports of almost all farm, forestry and seafood products saw growth, both in quantity and in value. The country earned about $ 2.66 billion worth of rice in 2017, increased by 22.4 per cent in quality and 23.2 per cent in value year-on-year.
Meanwhile, the exports of rubber reached 1.39 million tons worth of $ 2.26 billion, up by 11 per cent in quantity and 35.6 per cent in value compared to 2016.The export value of tea reached 12,000 tons worth of $ 21 million in December and $ 229 million in the whole year of 2017, an increase of 5.6 percent year – on - year. The exports of cassava and products were estimated at 3.95 million tons worth of $ 1.04 billion, up by 6.9 per cent in quantity and 4.2 per cent in value over the year of 2016.
The export of cashew nuts saw increases of 1.9 per cent in quantity to 353,000 tons and 23.8 per cent in value to reach $ 3.52 billion last year.The earnings from exports of wood and furniture reached $ 7.6 billion in 2017, up by 9.1 per cent year – on – year. The country also witnessed an increase of 18 per cent in seafood exports to $ 8.32 billion last year.Especially, the country raked in $ 3.45 billion from exporting vegetables and fruits, 40.5 percent higher than 2016.
Vietnam’s seafood export value was estimated at US$ 714 million in December of 2017 and $ 8.32 billion in the whole year of 2017, a year – on - year increase of 18 per cent, according to the latest report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The US, Japan, China and South Korea were the country’s top four seafood export markets, accounted for 55.3 per cent of the total. The leading export markets with strong growth in seafood export value were China (up by 64.4 per cent), the Netherlands (up by 48.6 per cent), the UK (up by 36.4 per cent), South Korea (up by 29.1 per cent), Canada (up by 22.3 per cent) and Japan (up by 20 per cent).The country’s import value of seafood products reached $ 152 million in December and $ 1.45 billion in 2017, up by 30.4 per cent year – on – year.
According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), shrimp exports provided the biggest contribution to the country’s total seafood export value, with a growth rate of 21 per cent to $3.8 billion in export value for 2017.Meanwhile, the export value of Tra fish (pangasius) reached nearly $1.8 billion in 2017, a year – on - year increase of 4 per cent despite of difficulties in many export markets.
The exports of tuna as well as squid and octopus reached $600 million, up by 16 per cent and 42 per cent, respectively.Last year, China surpassed the US and became the top export market of Vietnam’s Tra and shrimp products.Vietnam’s seafood exports totaled US$ 8.32 billion in 2017, increased by 18 per cent over the year of 2016, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs. The U.S was leading the list of 45 major seafood export markets of Vietnam with the export turnover of $ 1.41 billion, slightly decreased by 1.9 per cent and accounted for 16.9 per cent of the total. Japan ranked second with over $ 1.3 billion, up by 18.6 per cent; and then China – over $ 1.09 billion, up by 59.4 per cent; South Korea - $ 778.54 million, up by 28 per cent.
Last year, the country’s exports of seafood to Denmark increased sharply by 83.6 per cent to $ 66.69 million; to Israel – up by 53.8 per cent to $ 72.25 million; to Brazil – up by 55.7 per cent to $ 105.9 million; to the Philippines – up by 62 per cent to $ 131.29 million; and to Pakistan – up by 63 per cent to $ 38.1 million.
The country exports of shrimp reached a record high of $ 3.8 billion in 2017, up by over 21 per cent year – on – year, while the exports of Tra fish reached nearly $ 1.8 billion, up by 4 per cent. The exports of tuna hit $ 600 million, up by 16 per cent; and the exports of squids and octopus reached nearly $ 600 million, up by 42 per cent. In 2017, China surpassed the U.S in the list of top Tra export markets of Vietnam with $ 420 million, up by 37 per cent. China also became the third shrimp export market of Vietnam after EU and Japan with the export turnover of $ 677 million, up by 60 per cent year – on – year. According to VASEP, China will still be the important and potential markets for Vietnamese seafood businesses in the next time. VASEP is also expected that Vietnam’s seafood exports may reach over $ 8.5 billion in 2018.
 
Fruits and vegetables
Vietnam’s agricultural sector had a very successful year of 2017 with the record export turnover of US$ 36.3 billion, up by 13 per cent over 2016. The country’s exports of major farm products were estimated at $ 18.96 billion, up by 15.7 per cent year – on – year. Especially, the exports of fruits and vegetables reached $ 3.45 billion, up by 40.5 per cent over the previous year. The leading 10 export markets of fruits and vegetables in 2017 were China – with 75.6 per cent of the total market share; Japan – 3.64 per cent; the U.S – 2.94 per cent; South Korea – 2.59 per cent; the Netherlands – 1.81 per cent; Malaysia – 1.43 per cent; Taipei – China – 1.33 per cent; Thailand – 1.03 per cent; the U.A.E – 1.01 per cent; Russia – 0.85 per cent. Last year, Vienam’s mangos had been permitted to export to the U.S market.
Vietnam earned US$ 3.52 billion from exports of 353,268 tons of cashew nuts in 2017, increased by 1.9 per cent in quantity and 23.8 per cent in value compared with 2016, showed the preliminary statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.The average cashew export price in 2017 increased sharply by 24 per cent year – on – year to $ 9,955 per ton. The U.S was leading the list of the country’s cashew export markets last year with 120,761 tons worth of $ 1.22 billion, accounted for 34 per cent of the total cashew exports, increased by 2.8 per cent in quantity and 25.7 per cent in value compared with 2016.
Meanwhile, the country’s exports of cashew nuts to the Netherlands reached 52,767 tons worth of $ 541.81 million, up by 13.7 per cent in quantity and 41.6 per cent in value.
The exports of cashew to China decreased by 7.2 per cent in quantity but increased by 11.2 per cent in value to 48,064 tons worth of $ 469.38 million. Last year, the country’s exports of cashew nuts to Belgium increased sharply by 142 per cent in quantity and 203 per cent in value to 2,662 tons worth of $ 28.45 million. Meanwhile, the exports to France, India and Spain increased by 53 per cent; 61 per cent and 48 per cent, respectively year – on – year. However, the country’s exports of cashew nuts to Pakistan fell by 70 per cent in quantity and 63 per cent in value; and the exports to Greece fell by 45 per cent in quantity and 33 per cent in value compared with the previous year.
The main destinations
Last year, Vietnam exported US$ 21.7 billion worth of goods to the South East Asian countries, increased by 10.4 per cent over 2016. The leading export markets of Vietnam in the South East Asian region were:
Thailand: In 2017, Vietnam’s total exports of goods to Thailand were estimated at $ 4.8 billion, up by 29 per cent over the year of 2016. The major items exported by the country to Thailand in 2017 were cell phones and accessories - $ 1.2 billion, up by 69 per cent; crude oil - $ 427 million, up by 170 per cent; fibers of all kinds - $ 91 million, up by 31 per cent; cashew nuts - $ 87 million, up by 42 per cent; iron and steel of all kinds - $ 158 million, up by 42 per cent; electric wires and cables - $ 42 million, up by 64 per cent.
In 2017, the country’s exports of textiles and garments to Thailand increased by 18 per cent to $ 102 million; machines, equipment and spare parts – up by 11 per cent to $ 331 million; computers, electronics and components - $ 483 million, up by 196 per cent; means of transport and spare parts – up by 3 per cent to $ 330 million; seafood – up by 2 per cent to $ 248 million; iron and steel products – up by 25 per cent to $ 163 million.
Malaysia: Last year, Vietnam’s exports of goods to Malaysia were estimated at $ 42 million, up by 27 per cent over the same period of 2016. In 2017, Vietnam’s exports of computers, electronics and components to Malaysia were estimated at $ 1.17 billion, up by 36 per cent over the year of 2016; cell phones and accessories - $ 609 million, up by 37 per cent; crude oil - $ 228 million, up by 20 per cent; iron and steel of all kinds - $ 235 million, up by 105 per cent; machines, equipment and spare parts - $ 195 million, up by 37 per cent; glass and products - $ 194 million, up by 21 per cent; coal – $ 42.1 million, up by 54 per cent. Especially, the country’s exports of rice to Malaysia increased sharply by 84 per cent to $ 216 million.
Singapore: Last year, Vietnam’s exports of goods to Singapore were estimated at $ 3 billion, up by 17.7 per cent year – on – year. The country’s exports of computers, electronics and components to Singapore increased by 29 per cent to $ 520 million; means of transport and spare parts – up by 84 per cent to $ 235 million; crude oil – up by 198 per cent to $ 236 million; petroleum of all kinds – up by 105 per cent to $ 106 million.
Philippines: In 2017, Vietnam’s exports of goods to the Philippines were estimated at $ 2.8 billion, up by 27.9 per cent. Last year, Vietnam’s exports of rice to the Philippines increased sharply by 31.5 per cent to $ 219.8 million; cell phones and accessories – up by 108 per cent to $ 445.7 million; machines, equipment and spare parts – up by 28.8 per cent to $ 285 million; clinker and cement – up by 10.4 per cent to $ 203.4 million.
Indonesia: In 2017, Vietnam’s exports of goods to Indonesia were estimated at $ 2.9 billion, up by 9.2 per cent compared with 2016. The leading items exported to Indonesia last year were: iron and steel of all kinds – up by 32.1 per cent to $ 434.2 million; machines, equipment and spare parts, - up by 16.1 per cent to $ 249.7 million; computers, electronics and components – up by 45 per cent to $ 221 million; textile, garment, leather and footwear materials – up by 17.5 per cent to $ 192.5 million; textiles and garments – up by 22.6 per cent to $ 139.2 million.
