Vietnam – ASEAN trade exchange in 2016: Vietnam got trade deficit

AsemconnectVietnam - Last year, ASEAN member countries were still in the list of Vietnam’s leading trade partners. The bilateral trade exchange between Vietnam and those countries has been strengthened.

However, Vietnam got trade deficit with almost all of them.

 

 

Vietnam – Indonesia trade exchange hit US$ 5.5 billion 2016 – Vietnam got over $ 352 million of trade deficit

Last year, Vietnam got US$ 352.7 million of trade deficit with Indonesia.

The bilateral trade exchange between Vietnam and Indonesia reached US$ 5.5 billion last year, slightly decreased by 0.1 per cent over the previous year.

Of the figure, the country exported $ 2.1 billion worth of goods to, and imported $ 2.9 billion worth of goods from Indonesia, down by 8.21 per cent and up by 8.2 per cent, respectively year – on – year.

Vietnam exported to Indonesia mostly machines, equipment and spare parts; textile, garment, leather and footwear materials; farm products.

Telephones and accessories were leading the list of items exported by the country to Indonesia last year with the export turnover of $ 628.9 million, down by 10.24 per cent year – on – year and accounted for 24 per cent of the total.

It was followed by iron and steel with $ 328.7 million, down by 1.51 per cent; and machines, equipment and spare parts - $ 215 million, up by 14.04 per cent.

The country imported from Indonesia mostly machines, equipment and spare parts; wood and furniture; fibers of all kinds, etc.

 

 

Vietnam exported $ 2.44 billion worth of goods to, and imported $ 4.7 billion worth of goods from Singapore

In the last years, Singapore was the leading investment and trade partner of Vietnam.

At present, Singapore is the biggest trade partner of Vietnam in ASEAN.

The bilateral trade exchange between Vietnam and Singapore reached nearly US$ 4.7 billion last year. Of the figure, the country exported $ 2.44 billion worth of goods to and imported nearly $ 4.7 billion worth of goods from Singapore, down by 22 per cent over the previous year. So last year, the country got $ 2.27 billion trade deficit with Singapore.

Vietnam exported crude oil, computers and electronics; machines, equipment and spare parts to and imported petroleum of all kinds; computers and electronics; oil products; plastics, machines, etc. from Singapore.

Last year, computers and electronics were leading the list of items exported by the country to Singapore with the export turnover of $ 404.8 million. It was followed by machines, equipment and spare parts with 404.7 million, up by 25.8 per cent; glass and products - $ 314.2 million, up by 19.8 per cent; telephones and accessories - $ 258.5 million, down by 13.2 per cent.

In 2016, the country’s exports of crude oil to Singapore decreased by 89.4 per cent; pepper – down by 88.3 per cent; petroleum – down by 47 per cent; coffee – down by 22.6 per cent and rice – down by 30.8 per cent.

Singapore ranks third in the list of 114 countries and territories that have investment projects in Vietnam with 1,600 projects and the total investment capital of $ 36.3 billion.

 

 

Vietnam – Malaysia trade exchange increased in 2016, but Vietnam still got deficit

The bilateral trade exchange between Vietnam and Malaysia hit US$ 8.457 billion in 2016, increased by 8.7 per cent compared with 2015, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs.

Of the figure, Vietnam exported $ 3.343 billion worth of goods to, and imported $ 5.114 billion from Malaysia in 2016, down by 6.7 per cent and up by 21.8 per cent, respectively year – on – year.

Last year, Malaysia was the 8th biggest trade partner of Vietnam in the world and the 2nd biggest trade partner of Vietnam in ASEAN, after Thailand.

 

 

 

 

Vietnam got surplus in trade exchange with the Philippines

The bilateral trade exchange between Vietnam and the Philippines was estimated at US$ 3.23 billion in 2016, up by 10.8 per cent year – on – year, showed the statistics figures of the General Department of Customs. Of the figures, the country exported $ 2.22 billion worth of goods to and imported $ 1.03 billion worth of goods from the Philippines, up by 9.9 per cent and 13.8 per cent year – on – year, respectively.

So in 2016, Vietnam got over $ 1 billion of surplus in trade exchange with the Philippines.

Vietnam exported to the Philippines mainly industrial, manufacturing, farm, forestry and seafood products. Machines, equipment and spare parts were leading the list with the export turnover of $ 221.2 million, up by 8.09 per cent; telephones and accessories - $ 214.2 million, up by 56.22 per cent; computers, electronics and components - $ 204.3 million, up by 41.75 per cent.

Last year, the exports of rice to the Philippines saw the deepest decrease of 64.17 per cent to $ 167.4 million while the exports of pepper, chemicals, clinker and cement increased sharply by 188.26 per cent; 105.9 per cent and 100.04 per cent, respectively.
